Front end noise...

Thanks for all the help on this thread. I just completed the birf/bearing job on the front. My front races and bearings (inner and outer) were trashed (pinion races showed normal wear). Kudos to CDan for the help with all the parts (and my shipping woes). The noise is now gone. It was very good advice to have the inner and outer bearings on hand for the axle job. They were local and inexpensive. My cruiser has 87k miles. It was evident that someone had done a bearing job (poorly) prior to my getting in there. I found two different color grease (though it did not liquify) and a mixture of Koyo and Timken bearings and races. The tires had no play prior to my disassembly, so you really cannot rely on that test (I think it is more for wear than pitting).

Now if I could just track down that darn suspension squeak...

I am looking for wheel bearings also my local AutoZone is “missing” some of the bearing that their computer lists in stock, they do not have enough to do one axle, one of the ones they did have was used and thrown in the new box ::) (glad I opened the box to look at the bearing)

There is a local bearings & Drive dealer that has Koyo bearings and can order what they don't have, at the time I was in there this after noon I did not think I had the Koyo part #'s turns out they are the same as the Timkin #'s with one slight difference sometimes the Koyo inner bearing and race are listed with a “-n” on the end

interesting, I just got OEM Toyota bearings for my 93 and they are Koyo's
same part numbers:

Front wheel bearing small 'BEARING, RTP,45,73,K' Toyota
p# 90368-45087-77

Bearing = KOYO/ HI-CAP/ JAPAN/ LM102949 (*1* may be a *I*)

Race = KOYO/ HI-CAP/ JAPAN/ LM102910

Front wheel bearing large 'BEARING, RTP,50,82,K' Toyota
p# 90368-49084-77

Bearing =KOYO/ HI-CAP/ JAPAN G/ JLM104948-N

Race =KOYO/ HI-CAP/ JAPAN/ JLM104910-N

and sometimes no “-n”

I just did this on Kahn:
Outer bearing - Koyo LM102949 - $6.67
Outer race - Koyo LM102910 - $4.18
Inner bearing - Koyo JLM104948 - $9.96
Inner race - Koyo JLM104910 - $4.38
I bought the bearings from Torque-Quip Corp. locally. The seal came from
Chase
Gregory :-)

anybody got a set of OEM Koyo bearings and races from a 96/97? What do they say?

Now the question that probably wont get answered, what does the -n mean? If I cant find the -n's locally should I spend a bunch of time and gas looking for the -n's?

I was just pricing bearings this week. The part guy at the bearing supply told me the "n" stood for noise meaning it was a reduced noise bearing. He assumed that they did something at the factory to make them less noisy. The kicker was that he could get the Koyo bearings without the "n" but the "n" bearings were not available in the US (other than the dealership >:(). The guy seemed knowledgeable.

So my question is can I go with the non-n bearings without any ill effects?

I guess you don't like the dealer? :P

The OEM Koyo bearings do indeed have an "n" on them. The OEM Timkins do not.

I like the dealer just fine just not the dealers price on wheel bearings, but after speending all day looking for them I finally found koyo bearings (no -n) after gas and my time I am not sure I am still ahead :doh: now I hear i bough noisy bearings? :slap:

I found the inners a "bearings and drives" dealer I askead about the -N and he knew nothing of it

My question was directed toward heffenoche.

Not real thrilled with the local dealer's prices especially since I've seen some of your prices which are a lot better.

Raven,

Are you sourcing the inner bearings and outer races from different mfrs? I'm going to suggest you not do that. Or are you getting entire bearing sets (bearings and races together) from one mfr for the inner wheel bearing, then a corresponding set from another mfr? That's OK, the former is not.

Just don't want to see you end up with things not satisfactory..

nope all bearings and races are Koyo "hi-cap" , the inners were in a koyo box from the bearing dealer, the outers from Pep boys were in a SKF box but inside had Koyo bearings in a Koyo bag
