Hi!!
I’m new to the platform and recently picked up a 1998 100 series with 165k miles. This vehicle was owned in Missouri since 2006 and has been sitting in a guys garage since 2014. Did all the typical “barn find” stuff to get it back up and running.
First off, it has the typical drive to reverse clunk and decided to take the easiest first step by greasing all u joints and the slip yolks (judging by the built up crud on the fittings, they were never/rarely greased). I still had the clunk and after a few hundred miles I noticed a slight vibration at 30-35mph and then it smooths out until I hit 65-70mph and there is another vibration; the higher speed vibration seems to soften past 80mph, but I can feel it under the seats all over the truck. Tires are fresh and balanced so I assumed it must be drive shafts somewhere from all my research. I got under the truck again and the rear u joint on the rear shaft at the diff was just trashed. Clear play in it and wobble, I took the drive shaft off and replaced that u joint only, the front u joint on the rear drive shaft moved freely and didn’t seem to have any issues so I let it be. Put the shaft back on and drove it around for a few days. The 30-35 mph vibration is totally gone, and the clunk got like 20 percent better.
But now the vibration at 65-70 is still there, no change at all to that one. And when I engage the throttle and let off and re-engage I can feel a distinct clunk/punch when power re-engages. That clunk feels like it’s right under the passenger front seat (front drive shaft??). I just took the front shaft off and I don’t feel any play in either u joint there but the flange that goes into the front of the transfer case from the front drive shaft has a small click to it if I pull it forward towards the front of the car and push it back into the transfer case. There is an audible click / movement there, is that normal? Also when I turn that flange left and right there is a minor delay of the rear drive shaft beginning to turn, is that also normal? When I try the same movement on the flange on the back of the front diff there is 0 in and out movement and the front axles almost immediately move when I turn it left and right.
Has anyone experienced these issues and have any experience with what it was? Will replacing all the remaining 3 u joints make a difference? Also, what is the correct phasing on the front and rear drive shafts in this vehicle?
I know this was a long read but I’m trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can and I’m brand new to this forum / Land Cruiser platform so if there are threads that could help with this please me know.
Thanks!
