That's too bad, but I'm (good) surprised by the price of the diff ass'y !
I thought it would be much more expensive (I would have say 1500/2000 € )
Glad to see the part's prices seem to be cheapper in North America

Add another 100 front diff to the tally.

Rusty.

You know you just can't leave it at that. We need the morbid details on how the diff bit the dust. So what happened????

Nothing to tough, and I'm not a skinny pedel guy.
Off camber out of a creek bed, back end slid left and I high centered. POP! CLACK!
Spressomon strapped me out. After I got off the strap there were lots of noises when I moved the rig. Things were all right with the CDL in H. Long story short that didn't last. After some execelent trouble shooting Spressomon and Locrwln1
diaginosed that the front ring gear was kaputz. Locrwln1 jumped in and got things rolling and within 45 minutes we had the wheel flanges off, the front DL out (thanks Locrwln1!). We drove 200 miles home that way, with the CDL locked.

BTW those guys are still out there sucking up all the good sceanery and enjoying the good life. Who cooks scratch pizza and has espresso for breakfast when they camp?

Dan-Very sorry to hear this. There goes the mods budget. Post up some of those gory pics of the internal carnage. ARB in your future?

BTW_I have the 40 on the road, though not yet on the trail. It lacks only a traction bar. Hopefully by May 18!

My 40's t-case is in CA. And we have the High Rock trip the same weekend you guys are doing wentworth. I was going to take the 100.

I still have the GMC,

Sorry to hear that your trip got cut short Dan, I wish I was up there with you guys. Spresso told me about that run, but I'm here working the big overtime for some bucks...
Are you taking it apart yourself? If so, try to post some pictures of the carnage and we'll compare fragments.

I can feel your pain but this phase should not last very long.

Last summer, I had to aborted my offroad trip so early after "POP & CLACK" right in front of Cruiserdrew.

The next phase will be joy and happiness w/ ARB installation if you follow our footstep (w/ much thinner wallet).

Regards,

While on the subject of ARB lockers stregthening the diff...

A couple of years back I was trying to get up a steep rocky hill that I had no business even thinking about.

Front and rear ARB's locked, all four spinning and bouncing, just get the front up the last ledge and bang. Drivers side CV in two pieces.

Not my finest hour :frown:

Had ARB replace the CV and pull down the diff for piece of mind, no damage whatsoever. If it can live through that it must doing something right :)

Welcome, hazardous !

I see that was your first post.

Do we know you under a different name here on Mud?

Welcome.

Thanks for the sympathy everyone.
We are on the fence about the repair on this. We like the 100 but the mileage combined with the premium fuel requirment is a problem.

We see three options;

1) I have access to a 2 pinion front diff./ring, blow and go with that and put the rig on the market.

2) Replace the diff with a 4 pinion, and put it on the light duty list.

3) ARB, and not look back.

The problem with option 3 is it's so hard to stop once you start modifing one of these rigs. Our 40 is a good example of the "while your at it" syndrom.

We just need to put a pencil to it and make a decision.

Option 4: Apply option 1, sell truck, buy 80 series. You need a wagon to complement your SWB. Hope to see you on the trail this summer. I'll send a PM, I'm curious about your FJ40's t-case.

Dan, I replaced mine with the 4 pinion and have not had a problem. Ask Spressomon how mine did on the Barney-Riley trail with the 4 pinion. Yeah, I'd like an ARB, but haven't really needed it. OK, that one hill where I got stuck, but the winch inched me up to where I needed to be.
Or....
The 80 with both lockers would work also. I just read my own sig line.

Some 4-pins have bombed though....like mine. With all the labor, cost, and mess swapping front diff parts takes....the ARB's added cost is minmal IMO.

You mean you'll now have to worry about your CV's blowing rather than the diff!

Option 5: SAS the 100.
