Sounds like you need a knuckle service. Call Sam to get the parts you need, I also recommend you order a set of HD axle tube seals from Marlin:

There's tons of write-ups on how to do this. Set aside at least one whole day, get some garage space setup, and some rubber gloves and lots of shop rags.

I know that many of the vendors here (including Marlin) sell knuckle seal kits, but I've never been impressed with them, I prefer the OEM parts.

I just did this on my 85. My problem was the diff fluid leaking out the inner axle seal.
Definitely get the kit, we didn't, we spent days trying to find the right parts through the auto-part store. We also didn't realize how many seals are in the front axle.
Grab either the FSM for your year, or probably just about any one close to it. The chilton or (other brand name) books will tell you roughly how to take it apart, but be vague and tell you to put it back together how you took it out.
We did one side at a time, that way when we forgot how something went together, we could take apart the other side to see. Other than that, review this article in the FAQ section on an 84 front axle rebuild:
