Front axle rebuild ? Use gear oil ?

There is no doubt it can and has been done sucsessfully on similar axles, just not on Toyotas imo. The design of the Toyota setup just doesn't lend itself well to a viscous fluid in there. Not to say it hasn't been tried, I've seen a few full of fluid :D
 
What a plague. What does this guy think he has to prove?
 
Just as a side note, I believe pre-Birfield, maybe early ball joint from late 50's-early 60's, when Toyota used 10 spline ball joint they might have used gear oil in the hubs... I'm sure they saw the error of their ways. That could explain why there is still fill plug on the knuckle. If I recall correctly, isn't there early FSM's that stated gear oil in the knuckle? Maybe a holdover from the "olden days"?
