For those of you who have dogs...

My old boy Henry would crap where people didn't go - always in a corner of my place that we never used. Later I put a swingset up in that corner to get the kid racket as far from the house and let the girls 'sing' to passersby (they got up on the slide and performed ) as I could and Henry just adjusted down to a corner at the bottom of my property that also wasn't much visited by us people.

A good dog will never crap where he lives; a better dog also won't crap where YOU live. It's instinctive.


macNeill - IMO 6 months is WAY too old for paper training in the house. You might end up with a dog that won't ever poop outside. Move him/her outside ASAP. Not wanting to argue about it - my opinion only.

Much easire to do with a pup but you can train your dog to go where ever you want. Take him/her out right away after a nap or when you let it out of the crate you will have to keep in in when your not home. If the crate is the right size the dog wont poop in there cause they wont poop where they sleep. Keep it on a leash and go to the spot you want the job done. Pick a command like "Do your duties" or the like and repeat till the jobs done. Stay there till it's done and reward = playtime, not treats. Do this for a couple weeks and with a dog of average smarts it will work. Some sort of controled confinement is needed or the training won't work and you can never play before the job is done. I can get my dog to poop on command and she knows to do her thing before we go for a ride or on a trip. Freaked my wife out, when the dog was a pup (year old) and I had trained her to do the on command thing and we stoped for gas and I asked my wife to take the dog to the pooch run to poop. She came back and said "She didn't have to go" I gave the dog the heel command and we went to the pooch aria and said "DUTIES", the dog circled three times and dumped and ran to the truck. My wife just shook her head and laughed. It works but you have to stick with it with NO interuption in the training cycle. Good luck.

Sorry Dan...I have been out hunting He is my wife's dog and although he is gunshy I wouldn't want to risk anything happening to him while out hunting...if you know what I mean. I have a GWP for hunting...he just turned 2 and is really looking like he will be a great hunter.

My rottie always ran as far out as he was willing to go. When he was little it wasn't far but as he grew up her would always go out to the fence line. No training, he just did it.

Mine rott did the same thing. Never taught. He used to hide behind trees at the back of the yard. Never in the middle of the lawn. Even when we were in the woods he'd go and hide behind a bush or tree. Bashful bowels maybe???

good advice....
I will go over this with my wife & see if it's something she thinks she can do. Sholdn't be a problem... It might be something we have to wait till the weather is a little better. Lucky's 3-4 yrs old & very smart so hopefully he will train quickly

Our smaller dog (border collie mut) poops in an effing line. She scoots around when she poops. Barney (110# and only 10 months) just craps near our little shed, in huge dinasour piles. But at least they are easy to pick up.

I've had no luck teaching either of them to poop in one place. I have had luck with them not pooping where we walk and play in the yard.

i think that unless great care was taken to train the dog as a pup then your dog will poop where ever the breed dictates. Some dogs were bred to be a hunter so they don't have to worry as much about where to poop but shepard dogs like Pyranees, and other dogs will go out of their way to go away from the "flock" so they don't attract the coyotes, and wolves with the smell.

My pyranees woudl always go in the same place when he wasn't fenced in and then after he was fenced he woudl get up against the fence and go.
