Jees, it has become really hard to shift the T-Case into 4L. Just seems like asking for trouble to put that much force somewhere on the mechanical linkage.

Anybody got some tricks to loosen things up ?

Yeah.
They aren't tricks.
Have you put an eye on the linkage?

get underneath and disconnect the transfer case lever from the linkage

check linkage travel, it should be easy to shift - if it is then OK, the lever gets stuck on and can be serviced by removing 4x bolts and getting the lever assy out of the vehicle - you may need to heat it up to get the shaft moving, have done it many times - clean/degrease/heat to make things smooth, if needed fab a new shaft bushing and regrease.
 
The 4WD lever gets stiff. It can be dissembled, cleaned and greased. From memory, I think it is a roll pin that needs to be punched out.
