This does seem like it would be helpful, and I might ask a neighbor to help square off the end if I can’t get it today… that plug head is SO low profile it’s ridiculous!!

A large flat head hardened steel punch and BFG to push the edge of the bent ring outward, start with lighter taps and increase (impact force) as needed.

That is such a stupidly simple and clever solution. I'm also heartened that this is such a common problem that there is a dedicated solution for it. Considering I did eventually get the stock plug off (and I think without damaging or rounding it), I'm gonna hold off for now, but that's a really interesting idea for the future. We'll see how the front one comes off when it's time to do the knuckles... Thanks for the link!
