Rick- I don't think you have to worry about it since you have the A343F, which has yet to exhibit such a problem with anyone on this board.

I'm not worried for myself, it's just that I don't remember seeing any data on this problem. Maybe it's only one that tends to fail or maybe not. Figured it might be good info for those who drive around with those old cluckers of a tranny.

Shhhhhhhhhhh it's a secret

I do need to make a bit of an addendum. Two of the 4 have exactly the same part number and the two others are different part numbers. They look alike and I do not specifically remember the difference. It may have been the angle of the bracket that is welded to the solenoid body. The problem in identifying them is the parts catalog and the service manual do not refer to them in the same terms.

The parts catalog identifies them as "Solenoid assembly, transmission #1(for a quantity used of 2), #2 and #3.

The service manual calls them out totally differently.

I replaced the 2 in mine that were the same part number (85420-60050) and that solved my problem. I probably could have gotten by with one but I did not want to take it apart twice.

You do not need to drop the valve body to replace them, just the pan.

Toyota uses inventory classifications "A" through "F", "A" being most popular and "F" being, or about to be, discontinued. This particular part is a "C", slow moving but far from being discontinued.

The usage of this part in the US is 93-94 Cruiser only so the demand here would not be that great. The 442 is used in lots of other places such as OZ where there are a lot more of them.

Today was car day. Finally got around to doing some more work on the 80's tranny. Based on the advice of two local Toyota mechanics I flushed the ATF fluid. All 17+ quarts of it. I drained and filled the pan, then I pulled the top hose off the tranny cooler and ran a hose from the outlet on the radiator to a bucket. FYI, the top port is the outflow! Let it run through 17 quarts, then I put it all back together and topped it off at full. It drives was better. I am going to run with this a while and see if the solenoid problem rears its head. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

As a side note, all the fluid I replaced looked very clean. About the same as the stuff I put in...

I drove 700 miles in my 93 fzj80 this weekend. it drove great the whole time, but about halfway through the trip, the overdrive light started flashing while i was driving (both directions) when I pulled off to check fluid, etc i noticed that it wouldn't start in first gear. it was like it was in 2nd or 3rd. but if i put it in "L" it would start in first, then I could manually shift it up.

it seems like it is a heat issue, after running at 80mph for 3-4 hours the light starts to flash (both on way there and way back). after it has sat for a while and cooled down it will start in first gear and the OD light is back to normal.

anyone have any ideas? what does the flashing O/D light mean?
Good morning
i have the same problem with the A442f AT. Stars in second gear if I put it in D drive but if I put it in L it would stars in 1st gear
Can you help me to solve the problem.
Regards
