FJ80 V-6 Engine swap

Check the adjustment of the transmission throttle cable. If it is loose, you won't get the engine to rev into the meat of its power band.

I really appreciate everyones input! I think I'll try the less costly way and nurse what I have to see what

improvements I can make.

Cheers!

Once you get down to the simplicity of this engine you will see the beauty behind it. We don't have the HG failures like our 1HZ friends, no PHH, and we are in the elite F series club with the 40's and 60's before us.

I think you mean 1FZ ;)

Well that and the diesel having (lucky) bastards out there lol

I didn't mean to say it was underpowered. As an engine it's not. It could just be that the LC is 2000 lbs too heavy for it. :)

It would be great in a tercel!

heh, heh, heh,.. I slay me :)

I think a 1GR-FE swap would be sweet. That's a killer engine.

Specs (VVTi/Dual VVTi, 87 octane)
236/258 HP @ 5200
266/270 lb/ft @ 4000

The 1GR-FE is an option on the 200 series in some markets (Toyota Nigeria Limited :D:D) so it can't be all bad, but for the time and effort to swap the 1G you might as well do a 1uz swap

Sure,.. the jeeps will pass you on the way back from the trail but its not their fault the tow trucks pulling them are speeding. Besides... you start enjoying the Christmas cards from OPEC.

I have 1fz and I'm lucky to see 260miles a tank, but it has started and ran like a fine clock. Took me anywhere and brought me back from nowhere, but the diesel is sounding better. The cost would be cheaper then a new plastic car that gets totaled by a large bird... 3fe till it dies then diesel...

I know I'm a newbie... But isn't a 4runner like half the weight as a fully loaded LC?

'97 FZJ80: 4,751 lbs, 13mpg city, 15mpg hwy
'03 V8 4wd 4R: 4,420 lbs, 15mpg city, 19mpg hwy
'03 V6 4wd 4R: 4,280 lbs, 17mpg city, 20mpg hwy

I went with a 4R this time around for lower cost and better mileage, with hopefully comparable safety. It's not a smaller LC, definitely not as well built or sturdy, but it's got some mass to it.

I think that the 97 LC FZJ80 weight is about 1 ton *(2000 lbs) more than 4,751 lbs fully loaded with bumpers/sliders/armor.

And about .7 (1400 lbs) more than 4,751 lbs, around 6241lbs to be exact.

So a V6 would be nice for a 4,751 lb truck, but maybe underpowered for a 6,000+lbs Land cruiser.

Maybe even get less milage because the motor has to work so hard to push this big tank.:steer:

Keep the 3FE. Just had mine rebuilt and is great. Before the rebuild it still went strong. Just make sure everything is working well especially the smog system. Just a little air leak with cause a loss of power. A bigger exhaust will do it better but apart from that there is not much else to upgrade for more power.
Have fun!!!

Do you think upgrading the exhaust on the 1fze will create more power? Since I'm getting 13mpg on a stock LC, for right now, I'm alway power hungry. Maybe 25 more HP? Not bad for a $400 investment.

Which exhaust did you go with Jeffro?

Not sure on the 3FE, but a larger exhaust on my 94 made a noticeable difference with the top end. I also ditched the cats, which helped some.
