So here is another way I found to get around the rear heater issue in our 62's when installing a new console. The Smittybuilt (for $89.95) is really not a bad option for the money and it comes with an (optional) elevated platform to lift the rear of the unit level with the front.

I noticed some people were just bolting directly to the heater and not using the platform. I decided to use it and cut a section out for the heater vent like so...

Then I set the temp to high and cut the adjuster off below the level of the platform...

I am moving the heater switch to the dash and now it will be permanently set to the highest temp but that doesn't bother me.

All in all it is an easy install, you will also need to drill new holes in the base to mount it to your existing OEM brackets (didn't get pics of that but its pretty self explanatory, just measure 5 times drill once.) Here are a few additional pics of the almost finished product.

FYI: Plan to order the Tuffy cup holders if you go with the Smittybuilt. I am about to cut these off the Smitty and mount the Tuffy ones in their place. I'll post pics when I get around to installing them.

Looks good, my rear heater blows very hot and having temp control is 'nice'. My approach was to notch the rear of the console and retrofit the temp control and heater switch then lined the bottom with a bright(er) mat to make finding things easier.

Agreed... the smitty 'cup holders' are coming off next - but I will probably keep the metal cup base and add tuffy type holders.

Where did you find it for $89.00?

Is there still room for the hand break?

I like the way you did it BG_TX and I considered doing that to mine but I didn't want the obstructions inside the console, I plan to fab some kind of organizing system for the space. I almost removed the heater all together... I don't think I've ever used it here in Louisiana.

Next I need to find some kind of rubber gasket to install between the rim and the lid to keep it from vibrating - and also to trim out my rough cuts around the vent to protect little bare feet.

Did you put the Tuffy cup holders yet? I received mine but it looks like we have to do some cutting in the metal base of the Smitty, they don't fit straight. That's why I'm wondering how would you do it! Thanks!

I have not replaced the cup holders yet but I will post when I (finally) get around to it. Thanks for reminding me how slow I am...

You and me both @BG_TX.... Trying to dream something up that utilizes the lower plastic portion but uses dowels to create an upper section that will hold your drinks.

Hey @BG_TX is your console an 8" wide one? How did you measure for the right location to put the insert from your OEM console?
