So here is another way I found to get around the rear heater issue in our 62's when installing a new console. The Smittybuilt (for $89.95) is really not a bad option for the money and it comes with an (optional) elevated platform to lift the rear of the unit level with the front.
I noticed some people were just bolting directly to the heater and not using the platform. I decided to use it and cut a section out for the heater vent like so...
Then I set the temp to high and cut the adjuster off below the level of the platform...
I am moving the heater switch to the dash and now it will be permanently set to the highest temp but that doesn't bother me.
All in all it is an easy install, you will also need to drill new holes in the base to mount it to your existing OEM brackets (didn't get pics of that but its pretty self explanatory, just measure 5 times drill once.) Here are a few additional pics of the almost finished product.
FYI: Plan to order the Tuffy cup holders if you go with the Smittybuilt. I am about to cut these off the Smitty and mount the Tuffy ones in their place. I'll post pics when I get around to installing them.
