Fj62 MPG!

The A440 is a fuel mileage killer in any circumstances but locked in overdrive on the freeway. 10-12 MPG is normal. Any lift or loads will lower it further. This is also normal. Only if you are above 53 mph and stay there, does the mileage become sort of reasonable. A steady 60 mph will net you as good economy as you are going to get.

With that said I now get 16 mpg in mine. Routinely. The difference is an H55f manual 5 speed. Even fully loaded with a roof rack and a week's worth of gear, climbing the Sierra on the way to Death Valley, I got nearly 17 mpg. I don't push the speed though, and kind of settle into the Cruiser 65.

I recently got a ludicrous 11.76 mpg on a recent road trip! This is after a recent oil change, coolant flush, and many tanks of premium, as well as new plugs/wires/cap/rotor a few months ago. :|

they all lie - 10 to 12 under all conditions

Not so all conditions. I average 12-14 mpg under normal conditions, 15-16 (pretty consistently 16-ish when I drive across the state) when all highway, and my record was just a hair over 17 mpg when driving across the state taking HWY 2 one time. I got lucky and was able to maintain 65 nearly the entire trip and kept the cruise control on. Only slow downs I had were the few small towns that the higway passes through.

Also, I get 1.5-2 mpg less when I use premium. Keep it at 87 octane and my rig is happy.

I was getting 12 in close to stock form, but had an H55 in it. Now that I lifted it and have 35's, it is 8 to 10 max. I have to track every trip when I go on SAR missions.

That is one of the reasons for me doing a diesel swap, the other reason is the range is extremely limited without extra fuel being carried, something I don't like to do.

'Course you could always go to 31" tires.
I regularly get 13-14 out of mine equipped thusly. That's based on GPS miles, not the questionable odometer.

great point on the GPS miles, I track with two separate GPS systems. I have actually calculated 20% error in the speedo, which has also been relatively reliable.

Changing tire size changes odometer accuracy.
Big honkin' tires increase rolling resistance and kill mileage.
Big honkin' tires change the effective differential ratio effectively making it numerically lower making it even harder for the engine to turn the already too heavy tires.

Jus' sayin'.

I think mine hits the mileage sweet spot. 33 inch narrow (10.5) tires, 4.11 gearing, H55f.

Once you are trying to turn big tires with inadequate gearing, don't expect good fuel economy.

The best I've done is 16 on a warm weather, lightly loaded highway trip - cruising at ~70mph. More typical is in the range of 12-14 for a mix of highway and city driving.

I get about 11 or 10 to the gal form my 62. I can fill my tank and get about 200 mi. So I am happy with it all thought Gas isn't cheap.
if yours is Auto I would put a new torque converter and flush the trans case, tranny, and diffs

The only time I have ever checked my 89's mileage was on a trip back in Jan 96 when I went with a friend to N. CA to picked up my FJ45. Gassed up in Bakersfield and didn't gas up again until Needles. Flat towed the 45 with camper shell. The bed was loaded including a spare hard top for a 4 pickup. I figure oever 4000 lbs. I got over 13 miles per gallon. The vehicle was stock at the time. Power and mileage was really bad when running 33" tires. Currently running 31" tires, ARB bull bar with a 12,000# winch. Almost all miles are off road and the hubs are locked all the time. Guessing mileage to be really low even lower with the trailers I'm pulling around. Over the years I've found the 3FE works best with a stock setup and RPMs kills mileage. While larger tires will increase speed at the same RPMs it also moves the power band out of where the 3FE performs bests.

I would guess none of you have an .fj62 as stock as mine, including tires.
12~13 since major service.
17? Never happened in 25 years.

The last 3 fill ups for my 60 I netted a whopping 7.5mpg average. Given, its all city, and traffic sometimes gives me lead foot syndrome. On this year's Pismo trip I averaged 11.6mpg on the highway, full of gear and camping crap. The best I've ever gotten was about 14.5 on a trip, but I was only going 65 and drafting when I could.

If your tired of the expense, do what I just did 4 days ago, and buy a four banger for commuting.

I wish it was consistent, but it only ever happened once

Maybe I had a good tailwind....
