FJ60 trans and transfer case into FJ40

How hard is this swap? My 68 has a sbc in it and I can get the AA SBC adapter for the 60 to sbc. Or should I just stick with the 3sp and vacume transfer case? The FJ40 is all apart now thats why I was thinking about going to a 4spd.

Thanks, Tom

4 speed with the 60 split transfer case is probably the recommended set up if you are going to stay with toyota.

as far as difficulty i don't think will be hard at all but I haven't done that swap so ....... but I did just swap a 4speed and transfer case into my 40 just not the split transefer case.

front of trans is exactly the same, only difference is shifter location on top plate and splines on back.
if you have a SBC already then you would want the shifter location back some anyway, it'll clear the heater better. Simple swap with proper adapters, driveshaft bolt pattern is different and I think I can help you find drilled flanges for that. You will lose provision for ebrake on tcase but that can be fabbed as well simple enough with minitruck driveshaft disk and go cart caliper.

Tom-

Any pics of your FJ work?

you'lll like the gear splits with a 4spd. what's probably in your truck now is an old 350 bellhousing with a cut piece of steel to shim the input shaft of the trans out and mate the 3spd to the 350.
the 60 series tcase is stronger than what you currently have, can't remember off top of my head ratios on 60 series tho. what you have is 10 spline output , earlier 4spd are 16 spline and the 60 series is 19 spline tcase shaft. idler shaft in transfer case is larger as well. it's a good upgrade. you will possibly need to fab shifting linkage as you possibly have vacuum 4wd engagement on that old of an FJ..

The truth is the truck will never see any really tuff off road stuff. I like to trail ride not really into rock crawling. I also thought about just getting a 4spd and transfer case from a 76-82 FJ40 and saving some headaches. I have a bunch of pictures.

Here are a couple pics.

and This shows where the rod tried to escape:mad: That the seller didnt tell me about.

I cant get the rod picture to upload. Needless to say its a hole in the side of the oil pan with a rod bearing hanging out of it.

if you need a 4speed from those years holler. possibly have tcase as well. might even be avail to trade for your 60 trans and tcase. Pretty sure I have about 4 4speeds on the shelf and could use the space.

FYI.. Chris's SM420 would bolt right up to a 350.. No adapters needed.

I have the AA chevy v8 bellhousing to FJ40 4 speed. If you decide to go that route.

I ended up going the SM420 behind a V8 to the FJ40 3speed transfer.

Lots of choises.... Good luck!!

I dont have the 60 stuff yet. The guy has not called me back. Is it worth switching out the 3spd and transfercase to go to the 4spd.

3spd no syncros, tiny, bad gear splits.. 4 speed, pleasure to drive. Bellhousing will need to be changed when going to 4spd. You have the option of changing flywheel and clutch as well. finger clutch in 3spd vs diaphram in 4spd. Some people like the 3spd flywheel cause it has more mass when going at low rpm.
you can run your 3spd case in back of a 4spd with proper input gear and bearing in back. takes a B210 datsun wheel bearing in back and a 16 spline transition gear to swap. gets you lower low range.
Same clutch master and slave, normally on 4spd the slave is on pass side but it can mount on either side. If you get one of the adapters from 350 to 4spd which is what you would use with v8 you dont need the bellhousing issue solved when going to 4spd. when converting an F 3spd to a 2f 4spd you need differernt bellhousing etc.

In your case you need the transition bellhousing, probably new clutch disk then determine if you want 4spd or 3spd tcase. Lots of options. I'll give you a 4spd (H42) if you buy me a transition gear as well. You pick up in blue springs. If you choose to hang around for a lesson on tcases I"ll dig some out and show you parts of the "stash". I'm actually off all weekend. (which isn't normal)

To do this cheaply i'd grab ed's bellhousing, my 4spd and I can walk you thru the transition gear stuff. (you can totally take the tranny home with you now, get me stuff whenever) that didn't sound right did it?
(found it. was looking for the gear info..)

I've forgotten soo much of this stuff over the years.. Sorry!
I'm debating putting 3spd case in my 45.. Just not sure at the moment.. Soo many pieces in my pile to choose from. And no I'm sorry the 45 isn't at the house..

Added bonus.. You can renew or sign up for TLCA at the "Main Office" while your there. And pick up those corners you were wanting.

Or if you want to keep 3spd transmission.. and it dies, I will have a spare i'll give you probably end of this year. Not pulling it till I pull engine/drivetrain out of 45.

Options are good.. You have to make the choice of what you wanna do.

YOu running rams horn headers or block hugger? I can probably dig up pn's for walker exhaust pipe that goes under pan with ramhorn if you need. Pretty sure I have spare ramhorn headers at house as well I hope to never need. Can you tell I have WAY more junk than i'll ever need? If I can find good homes in the club for this stuff I'll be happy to get the space in the garage back.

Erik-

You amaze me. Your endless stack of parts amaze me.

Thanks that would be great. I will most likely find a 4sp transfer case as well. Kinda want to get away from the vacumme thing. I'll send you a pm with my number give me a call when you will be home and I will come over.

Saturday evening i'll be home. You can call the 1800 tlca # in the trails and have Jenn find me. Home address is in trails as well.. I'm not that hard to find, my address is the mailing address for TLCA..

Working Sat 8-4:30 then home Sat eve and all day sunday. I can find a 4spd tcase in garage that needs rebuilt as well but those aren't free :) We'll work something out, i'm not a parts store, don't play one on TV either but don't need all the stuff in the garage. WE can work out a trade etc. You can also swap nose cone parts and get lower gearing of 3spd behind 4spd and go to floor shift. I probably have all that lying around as well.. I can explain all the options then you can decide. Crusiers are like tinker toys if you know what interchanges.
Same schedule the following weekend if this one doesn't work out.
I'm here to help.. Erik..

The 1-800 # goes right to a machine.
