FJ60 carb cooling fan

I'm looking at an '82 and '83 FJ60 and may buy one of them.
The person with the 83 said there's not supposed to be a fan that runs after the motor shuts off. The one with the 82 said it runs on a hot day. Is this how they are both supposed to run. If not, what is wrong? Thanks
I don't want to make a mistake and buy a bad LC as I can't fix it myself and have limited resources. I'd welcome anywone with any advice about this situation and the specs on the cars (as I'd hate to brake down on a 2500 mile trip).
Thanks

Yes, I think they have both have them. US 60's have a carb cooling fan that helps with hot starts. If yours doesn't work, pop the hood. That should help get it started when hot.

Then check the wiring. Very simple wiring, from fan to thermistor. Make sure there aren't any burnt wires.

For sh-ts and giggles I will keep my carb fan in the rig after I do my diesel conversion. It would be a huge laugh if it ran, but if it didn't it would still make a good chuckle.

I bypassed my sensor years ago when the wire broke. Sure the fan kicks on every time I turn the key off (even if I didn't start the engine) but at least it starts when it's hot! Ground it off to the body.

Look on the driver's side about even with the carb, tucked between the inner & the outer fender. It looks like a fan with the exhaust duct pointed at the intake manifold. If the '83 is a USA model & doesn't have one, the seller is a liar. If it has one, he's an idiot. By law (just kidding) they're allowed to own cars. But they shouldn't.

hey is this the same type fan i have in my 88 62? its sits on the driverside innerfender and does nothing.i ran a hot lead and ground to the plug on the fan itself and fired right up.wondering where is the sensor for this and is it easy to replace?
thanks

Mine comes on everytime the key is shut off regardless of outside temp.

I have a used electric motor for that assembly if anyone needs one.

I was having trouble with my fan and tried the simple grounding approach. No luck. So I tested the fan with direct power and whoosh...it works. Damn, must be one of the relays.

Then it occurred to me that I'd love to have that fan come on whenever the engine bay gets really hot, not just at shut down. Since I already run an electric radiator fan on an un-switched circuit, I just spliced the power lead to the carb fan into that circuit. Now it runs when I shut down as the radiator fan is cooling the front of the engine bay and it'll kick on when I'm stuck in LA traffic or pulling slowly up a long hill. I have this controlled via a thermostat as well as a dash mounted override switch.

i was wondering if anyone has pics of the connection from the temp sensor that sits under the exhaust mani, and how it connects to the carb fan.

after i did my de-smog i have yet to figure out where it plugs into. i cant find the other plug it would go to anywhere!!

new carb cooler thermostat

Carb cooler didn't work. Checked here, found sensor way up there under the manifolds and encased in a protective shell of rust and corrosion. Don't think I want to play with that so I went online and found this: Amazon.com: Hayden 3653 - Thermostatic Fan Control: Automotive.

It's an aftermarket electric radiator fan thermostat that's adjustable from around 50f to 150f. Wired it into a hotwire under the dash (I had a switch before I found this) and mounted to a bracket by the fan, stuck the sensor into a vacuum hose clip on the carb, fiddled with the adjustment knob and all is forgiven. Works great for about 30 bucks.

UPDATE: When I switched to the Trollhole carb I left the fan control off and just grounded the fan. Works fine. Simpler and that's almost always better.

Sorry to post into an old thread but I have to say thank you to everyone who posted here in the past. I'm a rookie and I spent the last several months on and off searching for the solution to my "hard hot start" problem. It appears to be the carb fan.

My fan had the main power disconnected (easy fix) but the ground wire to the sensor was cut or burnt off. I simply ground it (ignoring the sensor) and now it works fine. Yes, the fan runs after stopping the engine each time but so far my battery is OK and there's no other negative repercussions.

Thanks again!

There are a couple other good threads with photos out there that we have posted in. If you can, just run another wire to the sensor instead of grounding it. Mine was inoperable beforehand and I just used some 12AWG auto wire I had laying around to replace it and now she works like a charm.

Thank you for sharing this. I did something similar. Your post helped me out.

More thanks...

I've had hot start issues since I got my 60 last fall but never had the time or need to sort it out (it always started...eventually). I never even realized the carb fan was important until reading up on my desmog that I just finished. With all the new real estate under the hood, I decided to get the fan sorted. I had to dig into the harness to find the blue wire that goes to the temp sensor that I had removed. I got it hooked up and now my rig has an operating carb fan just in time for summer.
I couldn't have done it withoutcha.

hi everyone, so like many people i have been having trouble with "hot" starts. My carb fan does not go on, because PO removed sensor altogether.
can anyone tell how exactly i can just ground the wire and have it run from its timer? From the relay there are 2 small wires, do i need to cut one(which one) to ground? thanks

I installed this part <http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000C39C6I/?tag=ihco-20 I bought from Amazon. It's a
Hayden Automotive 3653 Economy Adjustable Thermostatic Fan Control. I used a digital thermometer to set to desired temp for the fan to turn on/off. It works great. I'm sure there's a down side to this but I can't come up with one other than it's not a stock install.
