Wow, this went past an epic build 80 posts ago...
Just read this whole thread & speechless.
This is better than REALITY TV!

Since I have pretty much decided to go the 6.2L/6L80 route I am wanting to sell the 4L60e + split case adapter. Putting the feelers out here for an early birds. May include the t-case as I have a 62 split case here too. Undecided at this time.

Bought some more goodies from Japan. Been through most of what is available from Toyota for interior and the few bits of electrical items I wanted plus some odds and ends. There is still more available I could buy to finish off rounding up resto parts for the interior and so forth but I have purchased the stuff I was uptight about. Uptight as in if they went NLA like so many 60/62 parts are going I would be even more bummed than I already am about NOS/OEM parts for a resto.

Cheers

and just for poo and giggles, here is my v8 60 I had awhile back and also my 80 before it got rolled. Lot's of the pics in my old threads are gone.

The 60 had a ramjet v8, AA Ranger OD box to 4spd. SUA but 4" of lift, some customizing in that including a C&T. 35's with zero rub. ARB lockers f&r, all vinyl interior and a few other goodies like 62 r&p's, LED's, chassis resto, LRA fuel tank, ect ect. Really great truck!

The 80 was a 91 but had FZJ axles swapped in, LROR e-locker kits. 97 5.7L vortec and 4L60e to a split case. Slee 4" and Fox remote resi shocks. C&T on the front axle to set caster to 4.5* with 4" of lift. Chevy Y-link 1ton steering conversion.

I sold the 60 back in early 2012. The 80 obviously I totaled this July. Also obviously recycling the 80 back into all this. Just posting some pics and a few bits of info on how my last two Cruisers were set up. :D

Cheers

Though I drive an 80, I'll always have a thing for the 60/62 and 40 series....looking forward to seeing this thing and the monster diesel.

Have not done much to the Cruiser project at all lately besides toss out a bunch of parts that are no longer needed, ie smashed body.

Last week I did pick this up though.....

mag drill.webp

Only drilled a few test holes with it but it rocks hard. Got a whole bunch to drill tonight and tomorrow with it as I prepare a bunch of frame plates for another project.

I also got to use this recently......

flare tool.webp

It is super awesome. One nice and easy to use flare kit.

The work truck motor swap and refresh is nearly done. By the way, this is not a plug and play swap at all. Easier than say swapping a GM v8 into a Cruiser but far from plug and play. The vortec is all mounted up, got the old wiring figured out and powered up. Dropped the fuel tank and installed a higher psi pump than the TBI had, odd thing I found out is it sure looks like the vortec in the Cruiser was using a Cruiser fuel pump. Can't say I knew that was possible. Re-worked some fuel lines in the crummy but didn't have to do much. Used the flaring tool on that. The crummy & vortec got a bunch of new seals/gaskets, new clutch slave, new t/o and pilot bearings but the actual clutch was not old. Got a new K&N filter for it too since I will be using my nice UMP filter in another project. Bolted the TBI oil filter housing on the vortec, the one it had wouldn't work since the front driveine is in the way. Added bonus is the TBI has an engine oil cooler while the vortec did not. Got the engine turning over in the crummy from the key, that put us on the down slope for the project and swap. All I got to do now is finish the wiring, some plumbing and get the ECU reflashed. Few little drams to work out since all the A/C lines on the vortec have been converted from Chevy on one side and FJ80 on the other. No biggie though as I just need a junkyard vortec to salvage that from. Put 2 gallons of Monstaliner on the crummy recently (bed & rokcers) along with over 2 gallons of high quality single stage paint. Painted the wheels with RustBullet. It was an old 94 Chevy 3/4ton NV4500-NP241 with a UTB service body on it. White in color but had lot's of rust on the bed. Bed came off and got sand blasted + painted and then went back on. Did the crummy up in my new company color scheme, GM indigo blue with a grey stripe with black ML on the rockers, just need logos on it now. It looks like a whole new truck, ready for some good years of work. :)

I love my Milwaukee mag-drill. I use it daily and is one of the best tools in my shop. Couldn't live without mine.

I might have given you the name of my annular cutter supplier, but if not, PM me. They are usually around 1/2 the price of the name brand ones and last 3-4 times longer.

I'm still in the minor leagues on that type of gear....cool stuff though. Good stuff to have.

Last time I drilled 40 holes it was by hand and it sucked badly. I was going to do a drill press but decided this is much more useful so spent a few extra $$$ and got the mag drill. I got to drill a number of holes through the frame rails on a project I am working on so felt the mag drill was the only way to go.

I will be honest, I was never all that much into 80's until I got mine. It grew on me a lot and in the end I liked it a lot. Great platform for overlanding. Thing is my first 4wd was an 87 FJ60 when I was just 17yrs old. That was way back in 1991. Did my first off-roading in it and my first long road trips with friends. Needless to say there is a soft spot in me for 60 series.

I love that mag drill!! Very jealous.

Exactly how I felt when I picked up my daughters with intentions of selling it, I did sell it, to myself!
A good USA made Mag drill is on my list of "need to haves" now I just need to have the cash, the HMG's are supposed to be top of the line, most "safe crackers" swear by them.

A lot of the funds I had for the engine+trans got spent on the work truck and on my 77 Nissan Patrol. So I am selling a 1968 Patrol with tons of stuff to fund the motor trans combo. Still planning on 6.2L and 6L80 (thanks Frank!) with an AA adapter and split case behind that. Very temped to do something else though as I have a NIB NV4500 and Atlas t-case sitting here. 5spd is super fun behind a v8 but for my long distance adventure truck I think I prefer the auto.

Any ways, at this time no real updates. Just real busy lately and no time for this project. Working towards getting my 77 Patrol into a rolling chassis.

Cheers

The mag drill rocks! Drilled my first 40 holes with it yesterday, only took me 45mins! Totally awesome and worth every penny I spent on it.

That is 3/16s and 1/8" so nothing crazy but the mag drill made quick work of it for sure. Obviously, I am not done welding.

As far as an NV4500, not doing it in this truck, want the auto. The Atlas is starting to be much more appealing though. The split case adapter is $800, so that would be $800 towards an Atlas. The nib Atlas I have is kind of suited for the NV4500 so probably keep it for the other truck/build. But an Atlas will solve a few issues and for sure is pimp. I have found 6.2L for as cheap as $3,000 but it was kind of beat up and missing accessories. $5k seems like the going rate for a nice 6.2L under 60k miles, complete ready to go. Not completely ruled out a 6L since with just a cam and a good tune it can easily crack 400hp. Much cheaper to start with too.

Any ways, it is all up in the air until I purchase the crap and it is here at my place. I did finally get around to tossing the 3F out of my 62 on Friday. It had been sitting on blocks next to the truck for 2yrs, yes I am white trash :) Felt kind of bad to kick the 3F out of the truck at the scrap yard but it was a way toasted motor. And the only thing left on it was the oil filter housing and few other very small items. My next move is building a cart for the 62 so I can finally move the damn thing around. It has been sitting on blocks in the same location for over 3yrs. It is past time for it to be mobile so I can play with it. Got all the steel and 6 heavy duty offroad casters for the cart. Just need to build it. My shelf of 62 parts has gotten large and I am starting to jonze with the desire to play with it all. Work truck is just about out of the shop so that will free up a lot of space. We thought we had it done but Thursday morning on the way to the job site blew the clutch slave. I think I need to shorten the slave rod which is what I am doing. Slave pushed out of the bellhousing, I am guessing because the vortec flywheel is slightly thicker than the tbi one which caused the slave to bottom out and then bust. With all new exhaust, x4 o2's, x2 new cats the vortec is real happy and purs. Runs better than my 2001 6L which I bought new and have taken care of the last 14yrs.

Definitely going some sort of grey/black combo on the 62 for paint. Definitely making the truck a 2-seater. Definitely building a sleeping/camping platform in the back.

Cheers

shop.webp

Well after more than 3yrs of this old beast sitting in the same place in my driveway it is now in the shop. :)

I built a cart to move it around, used 3/16s wall 2" box tube. I made it 8ft by 4ft. Lesson learned on it, don't buy or use cheap ass casters from Harbor Freight (China) because they suck balls. We made it about 80ft before they just began to fall apart. They are rated at 300lbs each and I doubt the Cruiser in it's present form is over 1500lbs. The casters are so cheaply made the wheels (rims) just buckled and folded and then popped the tires. Three of them are totally wasted. So, I need some better casters, other wise it is a go. I may have decided last night to just plop the 62 on the 80 rolling chassis for now and use that as my "cart". Time will tell but for now, the friggin' Cruiser is in my shop!

Cheers

Ian, thought I share this with you....
this is what my rig looks like without the drawer system, tools, kitchen, water, rear bumper, swing outs, spare tire and empty fuel tank (need to pull it out and fix a leak).
Major sting bug with 2.25" higher on the rear... It sits leveled when fully loaded.
20151009_165335~2.webp

20151009_165400~2.webp

Im seriously debating if I should re-do the fuel tank and place it in between the rails where the stock muffler sits (below the rear pass door). My reasoning behind this is that I want the spare tire back in the stock location, and avoid any future damage to the fuel tank.
Im also thinking of redoing the drawer system, so that I can have the two drawers and fridge next to each other full time and out of sight...

Good to see you moving forward with this project..!!

Forward of the rear axle for the fuel tank is certainly best for keeping the weight centered. Doubt I will be able to swing that though. Funny but with no weight on the rolling chassis it sits very close to level. As you know I got the same springs you do. With the 80 body on it I had no stink bug.

Spent some time last night stripping the 62 more and cleaning it. Lot of crap in it from sitting the last 3yrs. Going to work on it this weekend more, along with my Patrol. ;)

Oh ya and I put another fairly large inquiry in to Amayama last night. Random body/interior resto items. Glad I am not chasing any mechanical parts!

Cheers
