OK, I have searched through about 40 threads, checked the FAQ, but can't find the answer. I found some pics of each installed and they look the same to me. Is the power steering box from an FJ40 that same as a power steering box from an FJ55?

dont know about power steering boxes but the manual boxes have a different angle and dont interchange .its been a while but i think the 55 power steering box is closer to the mini truck box. good luck

checked the fsm and manual boxes are not the same but going by the photos the power steering boxes look close.its hard to tell because the photos are on different angles but using an angle finder they apear to be the same .isnt there a way to access the fsm on this site good luck

Thanks for that. I might have found a PS box from a HJ47. I'm hoping I can pick it up in the next couple of days.

I dont think it will be any god to you, without modifying mounts, similar to what you have to do to fit hilux parts. Pick it up, and when you find its no good to you, I'll be happy to take it off your hands :)

;)

I bought a Hilux box, but if I can get away without modifying the shock bracket I woild rather do that.

I'll let you know how I go.

I do not think it is the same, sorry. I know several people who put 55 series power steering into 40 series in the States, and it required altering the bracket in the same way that the Hilux box requires.

Remember too that the power steering box from a factory power steering 40 series will not bolt directly in to a factory non-power steering 40 series rig either: the steering column is shorter for the power steering box. Additionally, the HJ47 never came factory with power steering in Australia (only the FJ45, FJ40/BJ42 came with it here), so make sure that it is actually a 40 series box.

Cheers,

Josh

I thought the HJ47 came with PS. I'll have to check as the box is still in the vehicle and the owner says it has PS. I'll find out in the next couple of days.

No, only the petrol and 4 cylinder diesels came with power steering from the factory. A 60 series power steering swap is very common, and it is not hard to put 40 series power steering in- but Toyota did not offer it in the HJ47...no idea why.

Ah bugger. Thats weird though. I'll still follow this box up and see what it actually is.

Quick follow up to this comment.
I actually acquired a US 1982 FJ40 with manual steering from the factory - I sourced a US power steering box and bolted it right in without any modification of the bracket or coloumn.

Video here of the install.
