Everymount needed to be modified for one reason or another. You will notice that we have the back mounts filped that was due to clearances and in an effort to get the tail as high as possible. We had to knotch the right rear mount to make room for the tranfer case cover. Next step is the final mounting with the orion then some cleanup on the electrical and brakes.

LC909, that is a great start good luck with your build and we need to get together for a cold one.

Cheers,

Jim

Well the pully plate on the water pump had been kind of re-threaded to course or should I say striped out. No problem... new pump and we are ready to go. When I was putting back on the alternator bracket the threads on the thermostat housing at the intake manifold were also striped. The manifold is for a two barrel and I would need to rebuild the old two barrel crab so it starts to make it not worth using a helicoil to fix the old intake manifold. Thanks for the replys, more to come.

Well we are back at it. Here are some pictures of matching up the Orion transfer case to the Advanced Adapter conversion to the Turbo 400 trans.

It sounds easy but the bolts from AA were smaller than the old adapter threads that I had salvaged from the original build. I could have put in helicoils but that bugged me so we decided to go with the original diameter bolts. That would not be a problem except that a couple of the bolts are milled down to allow for the larger gears in the Orion. We ended up with new larger grade 8 bolts and thanks to my buddy Gregg and a little machining we were able to get the transfer case bolted up to the adapter. Of course there is now a special order that you need to install and remove the bolts but that’s what’s makes things fun.

Next was the AA twin stick conversion which we mocked up a couple of times to figure what worked best for our application.

As you can see in this picture there is still a little tweaking that will need to be done to get everything aligned. I will get with AA tomorrow to discuss a little longer shaft but if that does not work I will bend the shaft slightly.

I also sanded, primed and painted the front half of the frame. It’s too late to take pictures of the frame but I will post more when I get a chance.

It seems that the further I go the more that needs to be done. When I pulled the shocks off to get the frame prepared for paint I had to drive out the shock bolts. You guessed it the shocks ended up 4 ½ inches above the mounts where they started out. They were actually holding up the front end of the truck. Oh well I broke one of the seals while taking off the shocks so now I need a new pair of front shocks. Not to mention I need to figure out the correct shock length.

Also after 3 years of being on the blocks the breaks are looking in need of repair. This will include the brake booster, which looks like some break fluid may have escaped into it, and most likely new lines with all the assessories.

Cheers

Jim

Hi,

Well it has been a while since I have posted so I thought that I would give you all an update and ask a quick question.

I have been trying to get an intake and carb for the motor due to the old one being worn out and leaking and once I took it apart I found several striped threads in the intake. I found another two barrel carb just yesterday so I guess that I will give that a try for now.

During my search for the intake and carb I decided to do a little re-wiring so I started with the rear harness. I found that the previous owner had matched an old 1965 (original) harness with a newer one that came with the 1977 cab (later model). There are green pin connectors on that harness that appear to be for smog but I have had a hard time finding a wiring diagram for it. I have downloaded the two diagrams that I could find on this site. The old diagram that I found here matched the wires on the rear harness but I still am looking for a new wiring diagram for the cab. Do any of you have a digital wiring diagram for the later model FJ45's that you could email to me? I really don't want to buy a late model repair manual just for the wiring diagram. Thanks in advance for your help. Happy trails.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi KT40,

Well, sometimes I think this project will take until 2010 to get completed. The economy has slowed down progress but here is what I am working on.

The intake manifold for the 350 was setup for a 2 barrel carburetor and when I started to take off the thermostat I found that the bolts holes were striped. With these two issues I figured it was time for an upgrade on the intake and carb. I want to get the Edelbrock Air Gap Performer intake with their off road carb. It sounds like that is pretty good push button setup. Without any substantial cash flow this year I decided to sell one of my rifles to get the money that I needed for this upgrade. My mistake was selling it to my son several months ago. So far he has paid me $200 so that hasn't helped much.

So in the meantime I have been working on the wiring on the truck and made a new rear harness. Then started to try to figure out how to match the 76 wiring harness in the cab with the 65 harness on the rest of the truck. There was quite a bit of smog wiring so I am trying to eliminate that without creating any problems. As you may imagine after that many years the previous owners had the wiring spliced in some places up to 4 times so I am cleaning up that mess as well. I am also developing a custom wiring diagram in AutoCAD so I know what is there and what I have done. The colors do not always match from one wiring harness to the other so it gets confusing figuring what wire does what. I have spent many hours with my multi-tester trying to get things figured out and then adding the information to my wiring diagram. Also I found that finding multi colored wire at a reasonable cost was hard so any new wiring that I have done was with high temp cross-linked single color wire. Once I got the wires the correct length I used large heat shrink tubing to create the rear harness. That came out so nice I am considering doing the same thing to the two front wiring harness. Now I am looking for new end connectors and I would also like to replace the pin connector housings which have very old connectors that I have found very hard to remove from the plastic without damaging the housing.

I have also flushed the break lines because it was getting a little dark in color. I bought the rebuild kit for the heater box but have not removed the heater box to do the restoration on it. All threaded bolt holes have been cleaned and a tap run through them to make sure things go back together easy.

I look forward to our new president's changes to the economy so we can all get back to making what we are use to. I wish we was a car company so the feds could bail us all out of these tough times.

The good news is that I still have the old pickup and slowly but surely we are making some progress.

Merry Christmas to all and thank you for asking how we are doing with the project. You have inspired me to go down to the shop and get-er-done.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Tony,

I live about 30 minutes east of Oceanside or 15 minutes south of Temecula in a town called Fallbrook. If that is close to you let me know and we can arrange a good time for you to come by to check out the old truck.

Cheers,

Jim

Jim,

I am a fan of the Edelbrock q-jets. They have a good variety of models available, and are very much still around if you search stores under their reman part#. I like them for their small primaries and ability to run at angles. You can get a matching Edelbrock manifold for whatever you need at not much $. The 1904 would fit your bill (and the electric choke is more push button than relying on hot air or messing with a cable).

Hi Jim,

I drove to the bay area to pick up my top for the 45, a drive to Fallbrook is a hop skip and a jump.
