My wife says I'm cool without an FJ40:cool:

News flash....Thats double talk for "even though you don't have an FJ40 and you wish you did, I still like you..now go and take out the trash and wash the dog!":D

All those social psychology classes...payed off. :)

when i joined the only other 40's that where regulars where Darryl and Vic,

with Rising sun basically being an Cool Kid 80 series club, im glad to see the old school back in action..

Unfortunatly with an FJ40 comes issues like, no Leg room, smelly Carburetors, horrible ride quality, bad brakes, lots of old seals that let cold air in, and even worse gas millage.

Yep, I know all that...

But when its a nice summer day, and the top is off, there is nothing quite like it!

That's what I'm after! When it's to damn cold or I'm going far, I'll drive the 80.

Don's going to help me bring it home tomorrow :bounce:

I was a big time Suzuki Samurai nut before I came back to my roots and got another toyota. I have to say the only thing I miss about that Samurai is the flip down windshield. If you aren't flipping that front window down and wheeling........you are missing the whole damn point.

Anyone can cut the top off of a vehicle and call it a convertible, the only way to truly enjoy a removable top rig is to get the windsheild out of your face! It's really hard to go back to a hard top type vehicle after that.

I used to get pulled over all the damn time for driving that thing with no windsheild and goggles.........ahhhh.....the good ol' days..........

I like my windshield and heater and doors and tailgate and windows, so it smells like a cross between a brewery and a smelly ol' goat. I like my '60, it is the best truck I own. The next truck will be the best truck I own also. If it can pull out a Heep, it is a good truck indeed.

PSSSST: they lie!

Ya better be careful with all the cool guys in the club with 40's now she might see the bright side. :steer:

seems to be so very true :hhmm:

Eric now has a very sweet unmolested 40. Well, virtually unmolested. The only molestation it has is of the good kind, a 2f. The wiring, dash, body, is all untouched and in great shape.

Ok, so who can school me on carbs?
The PO had just installed a Weber 34-34 : http://www.webercarbsdirect.com/product_p/wk743-34.htm
It idles great, and runs well at low RPM, but gets rough and power falls off at I'd guess 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, particularly under load.

I haven't touched a carb on anything bigger then a lawnmower in 20 years, and I don't have any documentation on this one. I think I correctly identified the idle mixture screw, and played with it a bit to no real effect.

Oh yea - the gas gauge doesn't work either. Guess how I figured that out!

The 2f kinda sounds like a lawn mower, about the same power as well. :D Sorry couldn't resist. Congrats on the purchase Eric, looking forward to seeing it. I've been kinda keeping an eye out for one, maybe as a father/son project.

I was always terrified of rebuilding carbs until my Fathers paint guy did one one day. I couldn't believe all he did was read the directions.
Years later when I did my first Holley (very simple) I bought a book and studied it, got the kit and did it. Same with Quadrajets. Now Webers I am not sure, as I do not own a motorcycle!
I will look, I "think" I may have a book on Webers.
I would definately get that stock carb built while you are tinkering with the Weber though.

I am wondering if he did any adjusting on it, or just tossed it on and ran with it?

I have found out from experience to check the ground on the top of the fuel tank. Also check the resistance and ensure that it changes as the gauge moves.

Yea, I'm looking at getting a book on the webers - seems alot of folks on mud don't have a very high opinion of the 34/34. I don't think the PO did much more then throw the Weber on there - I sent him an email asking if any manual or such came with it. I'll see about getting the OEM one rebuilt also.

Eric, sounds like your accelarator pump is bad
34/36 dgas weber is the best weber on a 2f
my opionion would be a 77-78 asin carb= jim c or marks off road...300$ rebuilt with a 78+ electronic dizzy with a pertronix module would be the best mods you can do to that 2f, besides a TBI conversion!!

I have a weber book you can borrow, if needed!:D

Justin

I've been looking to replace the front seats on my 60 if you are serious about getting rid of those--do you know where they came from?

PO just said "some minivan" :D
I'm serious about getting rid of them, but I'll have to find something else first - will be checking the yards on Saturday.

Accelerator pump is part of the carb, right? You think it would be bad on a brand new carb? In any case, I'll give you a call about that book.

What's involved in that Petronix upgrade - just the ignitor module? Where did you find it for $78 - in my quick search I'm seeing $95 and up.

I think he said to use a 1978 and up distributor with a Petronix module.

I think the 34mm carb is not enough for that engine.

So I just found the receipt in the glove box for the engine swap. It looks like they completely rebuilt that 2F before they put it in + new clutch, distributer, radiator & rebuilt transfer case. Receipt totals to over $5K in parts and labor. Was done by Rod's Automotive Machine Inc. back in 2003.

So for all that, I can't imagine why they didn't do the carb right. The automatic choke isn't working right, so I can't get it started tonight :(

The receipt includes a "carb kit", but there's no line item for rebuilding the carb?? So maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. Maybe I should just try taking off the weber and putting on the Aisin?

If you can put a manual choke on the Weber like you can real carbs, I would do that, and get the stock carb built by a reputable person. IE: Jim Chenowith I have heard of several people that have taken off the Webers and put stock carbs back on and been much happier. And most of them had a bigger Weber.
I know the manual choke for Holleys, Rochesters and the like used to be under $10 at one time.

Yea, I'm boxing up the Aisin and sending it to Mark"s Offroad tomorrow.

A good day @ the pick-n-pull. Found a pair of Bestop jeep seats - faded, but otherwise good. A a Tuffy center console. All for about $110
