Hi I got a 74 fj40 with a 1F 4 speed. Previous owner smashed the crap out of the backing plate for the ebrake on the tcase. I put in a new seal a couple months ago and noticed that the drum was very grooved as well so I installed a speedi-sleeve on it. Seemed to hold fluid for a while but after 2 days of wheeingl it is now just puking fluid again. Question is, is there a like a tcase brake delete conversion or something and just get a flange for it? or even better if someone has a backing plate with all the hardware and shoes and drum that is willing to sell it would be awesome. Also does anyone know the part number for the rear seal I can't seem to find the receipt for it. Thanks

Dumpy, keep looking, but I get home in a couple of weeks and can see if I have any parts in
the pile. If I do have anything I expect it will be a whole assembly, but I can't remember off
the top of my head.
If you wanted to ask around an delete the tcase e brake, suggest replacing rear backing plate with
60 stuff, getting an e cable from a BJ70 for correct length. This might be costly but ultimately
a better ebrake and easier/cheaper to maintain. Diesel Cruiserman - do you think this is a
doable conversion?

Are u sure it's the backing plate... just curious if you have looked around for any cracks on the tcase housing...
I have a backing plate kicking around in the garage ...

It's not leaking from the backing plate I'm just saying I might as well delete the ebrake if the backing plate is that mangled and the shaft on the drum being so worn out and pitted its not sealing the fluid anymore. Like if I could just do a ebrake delete with a flange with the proper shaft thickness and all would just simplify things. But definitely would be nice to have a working ebrake tho I don't trust the thing on hills whatsoever.

If you replaced the seal then it started leaking a couple of days later I'd lean toward it being an output shaft preload issue or t-case rebuild time . Trying to re-invent the brake/seal assay at the back won't do anything for stopping it from leaking . If you installed a speedy sleeve then there shouldn't be grooves in the drum anymore . Pre-load is set by a shim under the speedo housing . I have had luck adding a shim to tighten up an old case before to save a complete rebuild before going wheeling for the weekend . Not a permanent fix but will work for a bit if you can't afford a rebuild kit immediately .
