I’m looking for a set of chains and brackets for my FJ40 tailgate. I have also seen a few people use cables instead of chains, seems like a cleaner look but a little less authentic. I’m open to suggestions or ideas.

This is not what you want to hear, but good luck on the chains. I do hope you find some.
I gave up although I've seen a few sets trade hands in the 5 years I've been paying attention (not my hands). Some I just wasn't willing to make the $pend.
I might have a set of the brackets (the piece that bolts to the tailgate that the chain attaches to) for sale in a bit. They are in my "thinking about selling" pile. I'll think harder about them.
On the chains... I found some vintage chain that matches and fabricated the ends as close as I can tell from pictures, tool hardened and all. Shhhh don't tell anyone though, they'll revoke my OEM card. LOL.

Thanks for the reply gericurl. I was thinking I would be making my own chains if I didn’t get any reasonable responses. I actually found a set of the brackets just after my post so I’m good on brackets. Could you share where you found the chain at?
My buddy that collects old stuff from swap meets. I can grab a pic for you on Friday or Sat.

No the other side where those hook to. They made a special plate that bolts to the ambulance door hinge holes.Casey, like these?

I have the stock OEM hooks but the hole patter is wider and doesn’t work with 75 and latter 40’s. Someone solved the problem by building that plate and making the hook end.
It's interesting this subject comes up now. I'm in the process of making a drop down tailgate out of a pair barn doors. While making an internal frame for the tailgate I need to locate where the latches will bolt on to the tailgate. To find that location I need to make a pair of those brackets. My plan is to whittle them out of angle iron.

I did not make the set pictured above but I have done these before - need to check with my engineer if they got revised after our first set as I know we had to make some small tweaks to make them function “naturally”

Yep this is what we need. The OEM ones don’t fit the tail gate latch bolt pattern. I have multiple sets of the OEM ones.
I’m going to call BTB and see if they have modified the ones they sell for the different bolt pattern, if they haven’t modified them they won’t work for the years they have listed without cutting new holes in the tub.
Let me know if you decide to make some of these Matt I’ll buy a set.
