Sorta. Until it's 4 lanes wide in the middle of the city, 70 mph, windy, a rough road and you're going through a curve.

That's not a ton of fun.

My 40 gets the best mileage out of anything I own though. 😆
Even gynecologists have bad days.

Well, they're the ones missing out on a good time.

I would be curious if you lived in the Phoenix métro area if you would feel the same? Last summer Phoenix had fifty three days of 110° or higher. Most what being built is apartments and condos. Same roads just with more traffic.

If a toss up if I hate freeway or city traffic more in a FJ40.

An old member lostmarbles probably agree with the SWB 40 series not suited to either type. He is in New Zealand and believe it was an expressway thru when he got sandwiched between to larger delivery style trucks.
Pictures he posted as his BJ40 was towed away.

Here is 84 HJ47RV that was spotted in the phoenix area and later wrecked on a Phoenix street. Believe this was late 2014. I pulled a bunch of running gear off of it early 2015.

But do you have to chew first before you can inhale?

I opt to just not be there during the summer. Air is much cooler and cleaner in the northern part of the state at 7,000'.

If I lived there full time I would have use my car hauler to get my FJ40 where I would use it. If I do something foolish off road that would be my fault. In traffic no matter how hard you try can't always avoid all the idiots on the road. When I moved Phoenix in 1978 I always had a service truck to drive home until 1993 plus another newer car to drive. By 1993 I still had the FJ40 but also an FJ62. In 1983 I found a 79 FJ40 in a wrecking yard that was not as damaged as lostmarbles but was hit front and back. Side doors were perfect so I bought those for $100 apiece. Because of the damage front and back to the 79 I also bought the roll bar and three point seat belts. Those were another $100.

Real men may not need air bags. I feel the same way when I don't have to worry about other idiots. In many cases dying in an accident is getting off easy compared to injuries you have to live with. I'll take as much protection as I can get for pavement driving.

@* living in the past your assessment is 101% accurate. This is NJ and the most populous state. The ratios of idiot drivers grows exponentially just by population alone…add all of the other distractions and it explains why there are deadly accidents within 15 miles of my house every day. Anyone ever read a book titled “the death of common sense”. Thats another horror story…

add all of the other distractions

Cell phones were bad enough. Now we have touch screen sitting on top of the dash. My three Toyota SUVs made in this century all have steering wheel controls. But no dash screens. All have separate heating A/C controls. None require scrolling thru screens to operate. If you search you see threads on how to defeat the block that prevented washing DVDs on the dash screen while the car is in motion. I love driving around in the forest with the top off, doors off and windshield folded down. With top and doors on and a full roll cage do not feel comfortable driving a FJ40 in traffic.

I live in Gilbert. I did add a rollbar but still need to install a modern seatbelt with the shoulder restraint.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to stomach the summertime, luckily, I work from home and really only drive for pleasure. If I have to drive to my office, it’s only 2 miles away.

I hate the freeway, but I do enjoy tooling around on the surface streets and literally at every single stoplight, somebody pulls up and wants to have a conversation.

I like the fact that the 40 requires my full attention, and I cannot even consider even glancing at a cell phone …. between the manual transmission (three on the tree) and super loose manual steering.!
Like many, I am totally disillusioned with the modern world and actively look for ways to opt out of the consumeristic and tail chasing 21st century.

This has been my commute for over 39 years…3 different jobs..all 50-65 miles away. I could not give up my rural living, so….and at 71, I am still doing it 2 days a week
