Hey all,
First post on this site but I've been following for YEARS! This place is invaluable if you own a land cruiser. I'll fix this up a bit and edit however I wanted you all to know about it first.

I'm selling my FANTASTIC 1978 FJ 40 with 30350 miles. Very low rust and you can find my listing on craigs list in Cincinnati.

Asking $10,000 but am negotiable. Everything works and runs very well. It's got almost new BFG 33's and brand new battery. Everything is original except the sun roof which isn't the nicest and it has a small chunk of drivers seat missing (2inches by 4 inches). I bought it from someone who trucked it out from a California barn and it has VERY low rust for such an old cruiser. It's got headers on it, but other than that it's all original. I can get additional pics for anyone who's interested in different shots.

Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,
Stan

You should edit your post to point to the actual ad, not the page that lets you edit it. :)

Also, nice 40! I expect it won't take you long to sell it.

Then I WAY overpaid for it 4 years ago. I did some research and can agree that the 10K asking is on the high side, but just because it needs a shot of paint doesn't mean it's not in increadible shape. Like I said, almost no rust on this thing and 30K original miles. Good metal and a desirable year. I appreciate the info. Just FYI to all I paid around 9K and have some money put into it (brakes water pump knuckles some new hardware), that's how I came up with that price. Everything on it works.

The new list price is 7500.00 after looking at some of the other rigs out there.

The back fender wells on the tub are butchered

It had those ugly flared plastic sides riveted in and I had to take those off, they looked terrible (imho) but no other body issues or dents. I think it was after orig owner lifted it.

I have learned a ton in trying to price my cruiser and sell it and let me just say...I hope your :censor: has healed up in the four years since you bought the cruiser !

I'm messin with you a pinch but unfortunately what you paid for it is still pulling you to the higher side of reality I'm afraid. In the end, anything is worth what someone will pay you for it. In looking at the tons of cruisers I did in trying to price mine though, I think the fair starting price likely falls somewhere between fsusteve's suggestion and your current asking price. Unfortunately as well,I still think it is much closer to Steve's. On top of that, there are a ton of cruisers up for sale right now, especially at the condition level yours is, and even at your current price point, there are much better to choose from. You can still get lucky and find a local guy that does not want to travel or have it shipped and does not know how to do a ton of research on the computer and come close to your price.

Here's one suggestion, post more pictures here if you can showing under hood, common rust areas, frame, better interior and exterior pics with better resolution. Give all pictures good and bad. Give details on things that are working and those that are not (like gauges, etc.). If there is any place to get a realistic price idea, it would be here. Do what I did and start a thread in the tech section requesting input on value, you may get more input and less negative feedback.

I'd say get a better idea of the value after a bit more input from here and more personal research and pop it on ebay with a more appropriate reserve value and see what you get.

Once again, I'm not calling you crazy, or saying I know it all (after all, mine still has not sold) but if that cruiser sell for anything close to what you are even currently asking, let me know your secret and by all means, play the lotto;)!

I do wish you the best of luck in selling it

I apprecaite the feed back good and bad, yeah I knew at the time I was paying on the high side but knew I was getting a great rig. I've got a bunch more photo's of her and will take your advice posting them. Yeah should have put more research in pricing. I'll get some more shot's up tonight and see what ya'll think. Like I keep saying, everything works and I mean everything. Hell the 5 tires & wheels alone are worth an arm in their current condition. It has been garaged since I owned it.

One question, do people take pictures of their vin plates or grey them out like license plates? Wasn't sure if that's an internet no no?

I don't see the big deal with a VIN online. It's on every eBay vehicle auction, so whatever...

You'll definitely want to post a lot more pictures. Post all the good and all the bad (put some here, and put a lot more on a website somewhere, either your own or Picasa -- easier to browse Picasa than the others, by the way): engine, frame, interior, exterior. Then post more when people ask for the stuff you forgot, or didn't care about. :)

What part of town are you in? I already have a 40 but like to look at others.

your current asking price is what immaculate 40's are going for, if the rig is truly rust free and fairly complete I would agree with VAScrats, it's a solid buildable platform and worth more than what I quoted.

All,

I greatly appreciate the feedback. I'm not trying to rip anyone off, looks like that's already happened to me... but I can still :) because it's been such an enjoyable truck.

I'm up in West Chester

Anyhow, I'm in no rush to sell so if this doesn't work out well then I'll just have to just enjoy it a bit longer.

If nothing else enjoy:

The truck is VERY dirty (see pics) so I'm going to get scrubbing and take some better photo's when I have more time. Also want to get it warmed up and maybe add a video of the guages and everything running properly.

FSUSteve,

Just wanted to specifically reply to ya, I would call it exactly that a SOLID buildable platform, obviously it needs paint but I just see these things going for 15-20k and figures its not going to take THAT much to put this rig in that category. I've seen so many build threads where it looks like 1/2 the build is grinding and replacement and that's just not the case with this truck. It's basically a tear down cleanup paint and put back together.

If I were to do it, I'd weld in the rear wells to orig, drop it back to factory height and make it factory. Which is exactly what I hope the buyer will do.

Not to mention no engine or tranny work necessary, solid.

Stan,

I think it's a beauty! however, sometimes its better to hold on (if you don't need to sell).
my suggestion is throw it on EBAY with a starting price of ??? then see how it turns out. if you git no bites,,, then just stuff it in the garage for a few years or slap a $6,000 body & paint job.

either way goodluck
