Nissan Versa Tops Toxic New Car Smell List

The Ecology Center and HealthyCar.org have released a list of the most- and least-toxic new cars. Yep, that new-car smell really isn’t good for you, and in some cars it can be quite a concern. Potentially harmful substances present in some of the vehicles included chlorine, bromine, arsenic and mercury. The toxins are released when the car gets warmer. They burn off eventually, thus losing that new car smell.

To veteran automotive journalists, the inclusion of so many Korean makes isn’t a surprise; we’ve left many of those cars a bit lightheaded after a test drive. Oh, and the Chevy Aveo is also built in Korea.

It’s ironic that the Nissan Versa is the most toxic, but is considered the safest small car by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Of course, IIHS just deals with collisions, not new car smell. Keep reading for the top 10 most- and least-toxic vehicles.

Ten Most Toxic

Nissan Versa
Chevy Aveo
Scion xB
Kia Rio
Suzuki Forenza
Kia Spectra 5

Chevy Silverado

i had no idea the toxic smell was that big of deal. The smell is pretty strong in some new vehicles though.

I don't think it had anything to do with my incident - my little girl just happened to barf in both vehicles -catches the flu from school or something. She was feeling junky the other day before we got in the car. I used the enzyme stuff and it seems to have worked. Can't really smell any vomit anymore. I'm going to run my air purifier in the FJ for a day or so for good measure.

My daughter must be allergic to the new car smell. When I bought my tundra last spring, she barfed all over the back of it the first few weeks i had it too - that was harder to clean up than the FJ. She'd never barfed in my fj40, what gives?[/QUOTE]

Bring her to the Ford dealer for some test drives

Sounds like new cars should come with a barf bag for every seat, just like the airlines.

my boss says that some detail shops have a deal like an air atomizer or something. they spray the car down, have a fan on one window and a vauum thingy sucking the air on the other window, and they do this for about 6-8 hours.

he said to check with detail shops near new

sprinkle some baking pwoder over it lit it sit a few hours and vacuum it up the smill should leave!!

maybe i'll try the atomizer idea. I think the smell is gone after the enzyme stuff and the air purifier. My 9 yr old thinks she smells it... but I think it's just because she wanted to take my tundra on the long drive this morning - she likes to ride in the truck. Lots of good ideas here though... thanks.
