My impression is that one reason you don't want to run it until empty, is due to the accumulation of crud that could settle in the tank.

On diesel vehicles, it is a royal pain to resart after running out of fuel.

Sucking the goo and grit from the tank bottom is why I try to avoid emptying the tank. More important on older vehicles. In my '72 corvette you can look in the fill opening and see the stuff at the bottom of the stainless tank.

Laughlin trip towing

Just got back from a trip to laughlin NV. Towing a 3,000 lbs watercraft trailor with two 800lbs skii's. First fill up gave me about 18.5 mpg second one was lower at 16.8 mpg A/C on low during first leg, On high during second leg. Not yet filled up to get last mileage. Stayed around 55 to 65 mph until chp gave me a finger lashing. Launched at two primitive launches, one of them I had to have all four wheels in the water as well as the exhaust pipe. No problem. Second primitive launch was steeper but had holes under water level, still no problems. Use to tow with an 05 F350 4x4 cc lb diesel. Of course the fj does not tow as well but for the trade off of loosing a little towing capability but gaining other aspects when not towing has been worth it.

well if this makes you feel better I used 4 gallons for 6 miles worth of wheeling in Tellico... that's what .2 miles/gallong.. stop your whinning it's a truck.. buy a prius.

I told ya to not ride the clutch :)

On a 310 mile trip on rolling interstate with a full load @72 mph = 20.8mpg using 93 octane (automatic transmission)

What are you guys running for tire pressure on the highway?

Whatever the dealer put in during delivery prep.

When I put on my AT's (this week?) I'll try running higher than recommended pressures (40 or 45 psi?) and see if handling is affected. On my FJ80 (much heavier truck) running elevated pressures helps fuel economy and doesn't noticeably affect handling.

last two fill ups, 20 mpg for both. Combined city/highway 300 miles with 15 gallons each fill up. Speeds from stop and go to 65 80 mph.
auto tranny.

A little towing capacity? From a 1 ton powerstroke Super Duty to an FJC?
I think you lost about 75 percent. An F350 will drag 15 000 lbs with little problem while the FJC is maxed out at 5000 lbs. Comparing these two vehicles is way out there.

Problem is that it is very easy to get a heavy foot with this rig.

Sasksdiesel You are correct about the towing capacity. But since my 05 ford had nothing but problems I would have to say you are correct about no comparison. I had originally bought the truck to tow a toy hauler, but after all the problems I had with this rig I cancelled the order. I was lucky enough to be able to lemon law that dog. After doing so I was at a transmission shop in escondido CA. He had three 05 SD having their trannies rebuilt. All were blown and all three broke down towing less than fifthteen thousand pound trailors!!! All the trucks had less than fifty thousand miles on them. Why not warranty you might ask??? They did not want the same crap put back in their trannies. These trucks were their livelihood so they had to be rebuilt to last.

No problems at all with my V10 Super Duty. I have about 52 000 on it so far.
But I am not a powerstroke fan. To many problems. However I have had no issues with my tranny. I installed a tranny temp gauge as I got the truck and although it may have the motor to pull up hills all day the heat building in the tranny will kill it if you don't drive appropriately. This goes for all auto trannys.

14.18 mpg. first tank
this is ALL stop and go, city traffic, with never more than a few minutes before applying the brakes.
not bad, only about three times as much as the 60 gets.!!!!
