I have been wanting to make this repair for some time but just finally got around to it.
I used a hole saw in the drill press to cut out the old material. Then used bar stock, turned down on my lathe and drilled to fit the gear shaft.
Probably won't last forever, but I think it will be a huge improvement that should last a while.
