Hey all,

I am looking hard for the stock rear mudflaps from a first generation Hi-Lux. Toyota dicontinued them.

Does anyone have a pair of the rear mudflaps to sell or at least to take a picture to show the shape of the flap?
I would appreciate pictures of a mounted flap too, I don´t have any good pics to rebuilt them

It's crazy... Looks like there is 5 tie downs for the bed in the picture above. My friend has a 79 and he has 3 tie downs, I have a 83 with 2. As the vehicles got new I guess the beds got less tie down hooks.

I need to find a source for them as well, I am restoring a bed and would prefer the look of the 79 4x4 bed best with 4 tie downs per side and two on the tail gate.

Ah, I wonder if its because its a long bed. My friends is a short bed. I dint have a camera with me tonight. But my friend with the 79 Hilux met up with me to go surfing... Getting ready to paddle out I bent down to get the board and I noticed he had his original mud flaps on. They were striped and said Toyota in the font style found on the 82-83 tailgate.

We should get a section or a sticky going to resto's and style changes for the 1st gen Hiluxs. There is plenty of forums out there on them but none really on restoring them. MUD would be a good little section for it...

here is the pic sorry for the cell phone pic it is all i could find.

Have you tried eBay? I've seen sets on there for the '84-88 generation, but people are asking stupid prices for them. Mine are in kinda rough shape, the "4WD" is almost completely faded off, but the metal brackets are OK. Since I'm not going for total 100% OEM/factory look, I'll probably make something out of conveyor material that is a little bigger for better coverage.

Dountless, thanks, but that rear one isn´t stock , is it :D

lowtideride, looking at my 1979 UK brochure it has been 5 each side.

Granted, this is off the mark on the mudflap question... But I believe the reason for the difference in # of tie-downs is due to country of sale. In the US I believe the trucks were delivered from Japan as cab-chassis units and had US made beds installed. I have heard this cited as reason for rusty beds (sub-par american craftsmanship) I think too that the Americans chinched out on the # of tie downs.

Mine is an '80 Long Bed and has three each side, two rear. The short beds from this era seem to have two side, two rear. I like the tie downs and the look of them too, but I find I use the rails w / o tiedown almost as much as the hook.

2wd 2nd gen trucks had rails w /o tiedowns for a short spell (maybe 4x4 also). I have seen Canadian trucks made into the 90's with old style beds... I think it's only a matter of distinct bed manufacturers.

I attach photos of both bed and mud flaps to keep from digressing to far from the title... Though the mud flaps are not for sale:) And sorry for the mud... If you need a clearer photo, let me know.

I too agree that a resto-thread would be great. I wish I could volunteer one but no funds as yet. Feel free to donate!

I did have my seat cover repaired and I am thinking of getting my wheels repainted next time I go in for tires... That British advert with the splities may have been the deciding vote for Toyota Grey over stock Off-White.

Thanks!

And cheers on that beautiful little red truck you have there! Keep us up to date!

I'd heard that such was the case for the Trekker, but it makes sense, there were certain tariffs that applied to the importation of a complete vehicle, so I'd heard that some overseas vehicles arrive incomplete and are then finished here in the 'States. (IE those extremely fugly "Sprinter" vans are manufactured by VW, and Daimler, who disassembles them and sells them to Chrysler, who then assembles them, marginalizes them with Dodge crap, all to save Chrysler some money in having to pay tariffs, or manufacture a vehicle themselves.)

If what you say about the first-gens are true, then that kind of makes sense, because the bed in my 83 just seems kind of... hack-ish. Big seams and rivets, poorly overlapping sheet metal in the bed floor, and really beady seam-sealant that's flaking off, too. It's the bed, so it doesn't bother me, but after seeing the quality of the 40-series bed section, I am a little disappointed.

thanks for the pics, Tom. Ours selfmade flaps look quite close to yours...that helps. Trie to make and to put in some new pics soon.

The fist gen. Hi-lux was´nt even imported by Toyota Gemany, just a few made it to Gemany by so called "grey import companys", they had to battle Toyota to stand in for the warranty...
And the beds rusted away, they didnt last more than 4-6 salty winters usually...

soenke-

Where did yours come from that it's in such good shape? You mention a restoration but I saw this truck when you posted it in the readers rides thread and I must say it looks about as nice as any I have ever seen. Is the restoration mostly finished?

we bought it in a quite healthy condition, just rebuilt it to stock an refabricated some details Toyota cannot deliver anymore...

Some bodywork has to be done in a few years.

The bed is an US shortbed, lengthend about 25cm in front of the rear wheels.
We had to change to an elektrik fuel pump, the stock one could work with the new fuel with 5% alkohol.

Some work on the frame and with the door panels inside and we´ll be finde for the next years.
Hope we manage to get some ventilation windows and the window in the back to slide open from the US...that would be just perfect.
