Sounds to me like you didn't find TDC before you put on the timing chain....

Also, valves are adjusted hot, so don't worry about that yet.
my manual does not say to adjust the valves hot and i adjusted them the way it said and have not had a problem. and my manual is from Toyota. i also adjusted chris's by my manual and is far as i know he has not had a problem.

What year?
Cause the one for a 93 definitely says adjust hot.

and there is nothing in there about doing it at operating temp. now in my Haynes manual it has te same specs and says to do it hot.

ok so what i read is at 30,000 or 3 months you adjust your valves while the engine is hot.

and here is what it says to do at 30,000 miles or 3 months.

and once again this is in the maintenance section, i would adjust them as stated in the r&r section then follow the ma sections.

what i know so far...... the balancer is bad the timing mark and the notch are not lined up like on a new one.... counted pennies today to buy one for 130 bucks..... dang that is high...

the manual says TDC compression... where should the key way notch timing mark on the balancer be when realigning the chain be?? not the dot on the timing gear as it is behind its cover at this point.... we fouled up some how aligning the thing.... who know what happened.. there

on a rebuild there is hypothetically no wear. after 30,000 there is. well that is my theory but it is the same even if you are reusing the old parts so who knows. i guess the toyota gurus must have.
maybe after 30k everything is seated and worn in place sort of speak. that is why to do it hot at 30k.... and cold at rebuild start up.. I am also using the rv cam from engbldrs.com so the adjustment is different..

on a rebuild how could you adjust the valves hot... run it all noisy and out of any type of adjustment?
adjust them like the book says then run it and get your timing and all other little adjustments right then use your own judgment and re adjust when at operating temp at the 30,000 or 3 month mark. in other words if it is noisy after you get every thing else adjusted re do your lifters if not wait till the first schedule maintenance.
