We bought out house 7 years ago, and it didn't have a garage, and that was OK, because there was plenty of room to build at some point. Well, last year we finally got started. Spent months trying to get the permits going, got that sorted out and it took us a couple months with help from friends and family.

The only part we did not do ourselves, was the cement. I hired people to do that, since it was super important, and I have never done anything like that with cement before.

After that, my wife, and friends did everything. My buddy let us keep his skid steer for a few months, and it was super helpful. I can't imagine having to do this without it. My wife drove it, and my friend rode in a basket on the forks, and I ran parts from the piles to him in the basket.. we were able to build pretty quick like that. We did rent a telescoping forklift for one day, for the main beams. After that, it was all the skid steer and ladders.

We moved the man door to the rear, so we could open them both in the summer and let air flow through, which turned out to be a good idea. We'll likely still have to add vents, it's hot in the summer in there. I think some fans and vent the roof and it will be tolerable.

Final inspection day! Woo hoo. Passed, and the inspector was impressed we didn't hire professionals to build it, said it looked like we did. I was happy he was impressed because I felt like we guessed our way though it. lol.

Then we started moving crap in.... lathe, huge welding table I bought from my neighbor after years of trying to convince him to sell it to me, my best friend's neighbors were remodeling their kitchen... so we snagged some cabinets to put up in the shop. Free.99 and my friend delivered them. Can't beat that.

Built an outhouse. Can't be bothered to go up to the house to poop.

Just kidding.. I didn't want to hear the air compressor rattling away all day inside the shop. It went outside. Best decision ever.

And finally, got at least some power in the shop, and brought my little plasma table back from a friend's house where it was living until we were finished.

The shop is pretty full now, all the tools are in, lights are up, some electrical is done, but not all of it. It's soooo amazing to have a real place to work on stuff. I actually enjoy working on projects now, because I have a shop and am not outside in the mud or sun all day to do it.

Thank you. You know... it was intimidating, but now that's it's done, it wasn't HARD. It was a lot of work, and but none of it was difficult. Just bolting s*** together and then screwing all the sides and roof on. The worst part by far was dealing with the permit. I made my site plan for them, they give me a list of things they wanted me to change or add to the site plan, and one of the things was a list of things I had changed on the site plan... wait.. what? You gave me a list of things to change, and you then want me to change those things, and make a list of the things I changed? Ok... lol.
