I'm not much of a guy for pictures or a writeup, but I am willing to answer any questions that you may have. Here is a few pictures of what I have done so far.

This is an '85 4Runner that now has a '94 22RE upper plenum and throttlebody. Also, the airbox has been replaced by a K&N cone filter on the passenger side. K&N's run too dirty for offroad rigs, so another option would be better. I consistently find small amounts of dust in my AFM. Nothing crazy, but enough to wish I went another way. I still might. In fact, I might go back to an airbox and go with a cowl snorkel setup like Roger Brown did.

I have had the parts to do all of this for quite a while, but could not justify the effort. Other mods would be much more rewarding if. This is a time killer with little reward.

I did this mod because I had to install new injector seals and injector connection. My stock intake boot was also covered in silicone to fix leaks and my intake tube was patched due to a battle that was lost between it and the motor fan (before I went to an electric fan). It was time for the old stuff to go and new ideas to manifest. Check it out and ask questions if you are interested.

Some of the useless junk I removed.

Seems to run fine so far. I have always had it at a downward angle. I can rotate it if needed. Will have to pay attention to that.

And tension can always be adjusted

what exactly does it accomplish to swap the battery and AFMs locations?

Were you bored? Just desired long expensive battery cables? Do you always swamp it on the drivers side?

I guess Im lost? :meh:

I wrap a layer of old T-shirt on mine and it does wonders... Just change it when it gets dirty and the cone filter stays clean.

I have my intake in a U shape next to it... So it gives me room for two batteries when the $$ comes...

Some say it offers higher air speed giving a lower torque band.

I say it clears up room, gets rid of a cracked pipe, and cracked boots. The pipe could be replaced with a junkyard piece, but the boots can't. Boots are expensive at a parts store or even more at a dealer. The parts for this intake are cheap, the one batter cable I had to buy was $12. The negative won't have to be replaced because I can run it basically anywhere I want to.

As far as the AFM goes, it not some magic box that dies if you tamper with it. It's very easy to work on. Just mark your original position for if you need to go back. You are just changing spring tension. I may end up going with a MAF in the near futur, but until then, who cares about a little silicone? Everything has mud caked on it anyway!
