Hi All,

I live in Hanford, CA (near Fresno) and I'm headed to Fallon for three weeks leaving this Sunday. I'll be working on the Navy Base out there and was wondering if there is any opportunity to do some wheeling during the week and maybe some camping on the weekends. Nothing too crazy as I'll probably the only one with a trail worthy vehicle but I will have some buddies with me and want to show them a good time.

Thanks
Daniel

At a recent BBCNN meeting, a BLM rep touched on the Dead Camel Range. Southwest of Fallon. Google map, Dead Camel Mountains, Churchill, NV. About 12 miles south of downtown on 95, a road to the East could take you into the area.
Try to contact this person, Westermeyer, Daniel M Outdoor Recreation Planner (775) 885-6030 dwesterm@blm.gov, he was the rep who spoke about this area. I am sure he can give you more detailed directions.

Mike

Awesome thanks.

The Camelbacks are close, but a bit boring. At least you can find a campsite on Lake Lahontan mid-week.
There are a lot of mountains to the east, all with exciting canyons and ridges. Sand Mountain is only 30 minutes to the east and it will have a lot of action if you are into sand dunes. You could easily head north past I-80 and into the northern playa's like the Black Rock on a weekend trip too.

I used to work in Fresno and know there is no easy way to drive back and forth. The quickest consistently was 99 north to Grant Powerline to Hwy 50 - right on by Rubicon, but that didn't cut off all that many miles or minutes. But you do miss more traffic.

I drove up here through Yosemite to Lee Vining and hit 95 in Hawthorne. Had to do it with no A/C which sucked. That's getting fixed this afternoon. As far as trails go I found one called Bobcat Loop. It's about 40 miles from here I think. I found a website that has Google Earth KML files for hundreds of trails all over the state. It was on there. My buddies and I will but have my rig up there so hopefully it doesn't get too crazy.

There are thousands of trails across the state, but remember that there's not likely to be anyone along to help you out if you are going it alone. Plan on having extra water, food, jackets (it does snow in summer in the mountains), and hiking shoes for the walk out if anything breaks. I carry two spares and 45 gal of gas and assorted other fixes when I'm in the boonies and still I try not to take unnecessary risks because hiking out sucks. I'm sure you are plenty aware, but if it's your first time in central Nevada a little cautionary advice is appropriate as most people are not used to being 50 miles from the nearest habitation.

Enjoy the stars.....after the full moon that is...
