I just recommended a 99' UZJ-100 with 90,000 miles on it to my old roomate. He bought it for $16,000 and it had the rear locker. It had a couple of minor dings, but other than that it was in great shape, asthetically and mechanically. He lived with me for so long that he was converted into a cruiser guy, and until he found that cheap 100 he was on his way into a 97' FZJ. Both cars are great and you should buy the one that you like and fits your needs.
"Unfortunately Toyota seems to be taking engineering and marketing lessons from the Big3 (Lifetime fluids?, no user servicable parts, keys without replacement parts) just like they took them from Toyota on QC. Mr. Toyota does not get rich on customers who do their own regular maintnence and get 300k miles out of their vehicles . The money is in loaded disposable 60k miles and out owners."
Very good point NMujJ100.
I would not flinch at a 200K+ mile 3FE but I would not be as confident in a 200K I-force. But that is because I haven't rebuilt one of those or seen that mileage on many of those motors yet. Time will tell, and most likely Toyota's reputaion will continue. I just don;t like the new cars because they are designed to be serviced by dealers, not home mechanics. But I guess they need to make some money too.
Dealerships are scam artists though. A couple of my buddies work for some Toyota dealerships, and the things that go on are appaulling, giving cars back that haven't been fixed, not tightening lugs correctly, torquing on oil plugs, just spraying the inside of the engine compartment with brake clean instead of cheacking the fluid levels. Scarry. Just last week my buddy with a 94 SR5 4X4 was told that his irratic idle and hesitation were caused by a vaccum leak, or hollowed out CAT (this is what they told him after they replaced his water pump, idler pulley, power steering pump, and supposedly gave him a full service that somehow didn;t include an oil change or diff fuild changes!!) Well, he brought it to me and after some diagnosing we thought it may be a sprk issue. I happened to have an ignition coil off of a 92 FJ-80 and when we put it in the car was like new again. And the old one had a cracked plastic case. $3000 later +$70 for the ignition coil from Toyota. (OK I'll stop bashing dealerships now becaues I know there are some good ones around)
