I am working on mounting a factory tailgate on my '67 FJ40 project. I don't have hinges so I am making my own and ran into a fitment issue with the spare tire carrier. I have the original '67 flat panel type spare tire carrier on the passenger side which seems to be hung correctly but it interferes with the tailgate hinge when trying to close.

I have done some research and I have not seen any factory tailgates with the older type carrier ('62-72 I think) and the newer, flat type carriers have a notch to provide clearance for the hinge. I thought the tailgate was an option for all years. If that is the case how did the older style carrier work with the tailgate hinges?

Stolen pics from the web...

They're notched. You can see it in this pic.
I'm sure you've seen but I make a replica hinge set, they're not cheap but they are exact dimension. I also make the latch catches now as well

Thanks Matt... Your hinges look beautiful but I enjoy the fabrication challenge. If my carrier had that notch I would be in final weld mode but I started screwing around trying to make it work without the notch and it just wasn't happening. Really appreciate the pic!

It will also interfere with the right side latch. My 73 came to me with an early plate style carrier, I swapped to the later one like in your second picture when I installed the drop down tailgate. Hinge placement on the tub did not change. This was some years ago so I may have had to tweak the latch, don't remember.
