I have a GCC‑spec 2001 1FZ‑FE with an automatic transmission and a factory‑installed spare tire carrier (per the original owner). My understanding is that they didn’t normally come with automatics.
There is a switch for the carrier, just like the ones used in the doors for the door‑ajar circuit. It was bad and has been replaced. I recently took apart the gauge cluster and replaced all the burned‑out bulbs. I also checked all the symbols that could be illuminated. My cluster does not have a carrier‑not‑latched warning.

Before I start tracing wires, does anybody else have a similar setup? If so, does it just illuminate the door‑ajar light when the carrier isn’t latched? Does it do nothing?

I pulled the wiring diagram for GCC‑spec 100s and the connector locations. I traced the wire from the tailgate to the inside of the body behind the taillight. The diagram shows it being on the right side, but it is actually on the left. The diagram also shows that there should be a carrier‑not‑latched symbol in the cluster. Presumably, the non‑standard configuration (maybe the clusters on the manuals and automatics are different) means it was wired differently.

It’s probably not worth doing, but that’s why it’s a project car.
