I have 2 '77 2F motors w/ 4 spd. and TC in good running condition.I would like to use one and swap out the F/3spd. in the 55.I could use some advise on this swap.I believe I need to use the F fan and WP for clearance issues with the radiator. My big question is...are there any mods that need to be done to the motor mounts or crossmember.I'm hoping this a pretty straight forward swap. Also, should I use the 3spd. or 4spd.TC.What issues will come up if I use the 3spd. TC w/ the 4 spd tranny. Thanks,Matt:)

I think you're silly.

I don't know about the fan but scrap the 3 speed. You will need the bell housing for a 4 speed to convert and you can use either clutch just as long as you use all the clutch components together. Don't mix clutch stuff. I dont' think you need to change the motor mounts either.

I don't plan on using the 3 spd tranny, yet the 3 spd. TC.I will also be using a 2F and the 4 spd. tranny its mounted to .Clutch and all. Thanks

Is the mounting on the 3 and 4 spd bellhousing the same? Are the mounts interchangable?

They were for me. The 4 speed bellhousing bolted right up to my F motor and to the frame. The tranny's are different though and need different Bhousings. The 3 speed case will just need the 4 speed TC input gear and spacer when you mate them up. Also you will need the 4X4 shifter from the 4 speed TC and put it on the 3 speed TC so you can shift in and out of 4WD. Make sense?

So if I take the 2F/4 spd/TC,it WILL fit right into position where the F/3 spd/TC sits now, with no mods? Thanks for the info Bigsal

you will need to use the 55 mounts that are on the bellhousing, bolt to the side. the rear mounts are different 40-55, same bellhousing different mounts, fronts will be OK.

Hmmm. now you got me thinking. When I swapped out my 4 speed, I only swapped the bell housing not the mounts. This was on my DD 55. It all worked fine and that bell was from a 40.

I noticed on my other 55 that the 4 speed housing had different looking mounts on the frame (at the rear). They were smaller and the tranny rode a little lower. It worked... and I know the motor was taken from a 40 when the PO did the swap. I wonder if those were 40 mounts. Either way it worked on both 55's on my projects without a torch...

That's all I got in my wee little head about this.

Good luck.

the 55 mounts sit on the iside of the frame rail down low

the 40 mounts pass side sits low inside the frame rail but the driver side sits on top of the frame rail

and the differance of the rubber mounts, the 40 uses a rubber donut top and bottom with a bolt thru them and the mount.
the 55 sits on top of the mount similar to a front motor mount

Thanks 3 puppies,good info.I do have a 4 spd,55 belhousing,so it sounds like I'm in good shape as far as parts.Got this chest w/ a '76 55 2F/bellhousing/ tranny.Spun bearing but rebuildable.Knaack box and all,FREE.I'll see what I can do to get the ball rolling.Thanks,Matt

What the cluck? free?!

Oh yeah, don't forget that you need the 4 Speed TC bolts that connect the TC to the Transmission... the ones from the three speed case and tranny will not be long enough.

Finally got a chance to dig the bellhousing out of the box.'76 55/2F/4spd.Thought I'd put up a pick in case anyone cares. Also what oil pump system do I have here? Thanks,Matt

Matt, that's no oil pump, that's an oil cooler from a later 2F, it uses coolant flow to cool the motor oil, similar to a small radiator.

Any progress sir? I'm posting on ksl my 2006 gsxr1000. Time to let it go. It should free up a little fundage for my pile. Most importantly it's going to jumpstart subie powered Westy.
