started up the cruiser this morning an heard a knarly thumping an knocking sound,:hhmm: didnt sound like a lifter, but sounded like if you were to knock with your fist on the valve cover :bang:. well I havent taken the head off yet, but just pulled the valve cover goin to replace a few things an maybe surface the head an thought about what the #'s ment on top of the head ? looked in my chilton, my haynes..nothing at all told me anything helpful. my 71 FJ40 has : 86 60031 0909
O
a picture would be easy'r to point out . I know the stock "F" has or had a 3.54 Bore, 236.7 Cu. , 3878 CC. block right ? I was curious if toyota came out with options for cylinder head an if maybe there were interchangable heads ? or what to look for if the head had been reground previous via old owner. an what do those #'s mean ? is it just a date stamp an plant id# where it was built ? I'll get a picture up tomarrow.

pics would help.

60031 is the the part number.

0 9 09 is the casting date. 1970 sept 9th
Jim I just looked at my head, in dismay, it is the one without a bolt at the forward end for exhaust manifold. The numbers on top from front to rear are 221 11111 6003. By what you responded with above that would indicate 1971 November 11. Curious that my chassis number is May 1970 and my engine serial number is September 1970.

Hi Jim, sorry for the poor photos, my wife took them with a telephone while I sort of held the head. A friend took us to a place, must say I was rather surprised after passing through a couple of doors to the back of the building that was just chock full of parts for all sorts of vehicles. This place has one Land Cruiser cylinder head. And I could use some help identifying what it is. On the head, towards the rear, on the top side are the numbers "1111-60020-32." When I look in toyotaoverstock.com at various heads I find that the number is 11101620 for '69 through '81. An '84 head is listed as 1110168011. So the numbers don't match up to what I'm seeing. It "appears" to be an open chamber head, no valves. They want, gulp, $500 for this head. My friend said after we left that it was the "gringo" price, something I encounter from time to time here. The lady, while she did not have one, stated that a complete used engine would cost $2,000.00. Considering the cost of parts that is pushing $4K plus for a rebuilt motor. A lot of money, might cover my shipping and import fees to get one from the USA that I could reasonably count on as having been correctly built. I am kind of anal about that stuff, preferring to do my own motor builds because I just don't trust anyone to take the care and pay the attention to detail that I do. Your opinion, as always, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Lenny.

I have a f from a 1970. I'm in Oregon if your interested. I'd like to get it out of my shop.
Iron Mike I just saw your post. Can you say whether or not your F head has all the bolt holes needed to run my header? I'm not satisfied with what I am finding down here so my friend in Wichita is going to project manage a cylinder head rebuild for me. I "thought" that from the FAQ I could run any 2F head so long as I maintained my top end oiling system. However, Cruiserparts.net is advising that I have to run an F head, which severely limits my options. It is tough to coordinate all this from out of the country but clearly I don't want to invest in a head and get it down here and find I can't use it. Does anyone know if there is some physical interference that prevents using my "plumbing" for top end oiling on a 2F head? Iron Mike, I'm awaiting your answer as well. Thank you and again I apologize for not seeing your answer sooner.

Thanks Jim, is milling the head an option for regaining the compression ratio? Can the F top end plumbing be installed with a 2F head? Does the later model 2F head with the closed chambers fit? Sorry to be so inquisitive but finding a head in the USA to have rebuilt and then shipping down here is expensive of course and receiving something that won't work is an expensive mistake. It is a shame that MAF advertised the header as fitting F & 2F engines when apparently it only fits 2F.

Bumping an old thread as this is the closest I have found to incorporate my question about F heads.
What changes were made to the F head over the years and are they all interchangeable? I know E-67 had staggered valves and there was the F.5 from Sept 73 to Dec 74. 71 or 72 got the oil filler on the valve cover?

Can someone list the changes and what F heads are interchangeable?

The copper tube to feed oil to the rockers ended 9/73 when the late F155 started, commonly called the F.5. The oil filler moving was also part of the change. New oil system filtered all the oil coming from the pump. This engine commonly said to have the 2F oiling system.

Familiar with that change. What about differences and interchangeablity before that change?
ie Can a post staggered valve head (68?) fit on, say, a 1972 or 1973 that has the filler on the valve cover?

Not that familiar with any changes during the 9/67-9/73 head. Looks like parts are pretty much the same during that period. The oil fill in not a part of the cylinder head. 68-71 model oil fill is low in the block. 72/73 is in the valve cover. 72/73 blocks need the oil fill in the valve cover no matter which head you use.
