In the rest of the world it has a big pro, there is a tire attached. The Prado comes with a tire mount. Unfortunately this is lost on the GX.

It's a nice thing to grab onto while climbing in and out of the 3rd row.

It has a nice little storage compartment on the door.

It's a negative if you're street parking and you need to open the door all the way with a car parked behind you. It can also get in the way of things you have sitting on the sidewalk you need to get access too. Other than this rare occurance, I don't see anything else that would be a major bother. I believe they considered changing it with the 150, however it would have lost part of it's identity.

As a side note, nothing beats the split tailgate on the LC's.
I am looking to import a Prado R swing door w wheel mount from friends in Central America if the hinges line up w my GX 470. 2009 No EPA restrictions HERE. ANYONE TRY THIS ?

Looks like Dan did look into it: Spare tire on rear door possible on gx470?

I've also read reports of the door cracking or sagging after an extended period of time with a spare on the back, so that' something else to consider.

Becky from ACC Garage can do it on the GX door. Been tested for a long time and has a few folks with them mounted. Probably will end up cheaper than trying to adapt a non-US prado door (and shipping).

the only improvement i'd wish on the barn door is that the pneumatic rod lock permits locking at any position, without having to open it fully then lock.
