So, I just installed a Pace Setter header on my 22R.

Ran just to the 3' straight pipe then it ENDS.

All I have to say is.... it is so loud I'm scared to drive it.

Will putting a cat on it significantly reduce the noise to an acceptable level ?

Also, the gaskets it came with are essentially paper, and even after running the truck for 20 seconds they begin to smoke... Should I have used any kind of silicon or should I just let them break themselves in and they'll stop? Also, is there any danger of them catching fire?

P.S. the cat off my old exhaust has 3 stuck bolts, and I can't weld >.<

P.P.S. I live in the US, but my truck is registered in a county that doesn't require a cat.

buy a cat and mufller 22r's do not like not having any back presssure the motor will rev up quick but will lack a lot of the torque you gained from the header

Usually 2.25 inch is what's recomended for a 22R series engine, and yes a cat and muffler would be a good thing for the noise and to get your torque back. The paper gaskets..... just watch them for a few minutes while it's running, once they burn off" that will be the end of the fire danger....

Having a cat on your truck is just a good thing for the enviroment, no mater if it's required where the truck is registered or not.

These work wonders on rusty bolts/nuts...

Well, i got a new 2 1/4'' exhaust pipe welded on with a new cat and a flowmaster muffler.

The only problem is there is a leak at the head, because the bottom of the Pace Setter header sits against the bell housing of my transmission, preventing a good seal from being made on the bottom part of the head.

What can I do to fix this? Should I contact pace setter?

Also, is there any prep I should have done for the gaskets? Someone mentioned soaking them in water first, should I have done something like that?

Thanks

Well that sounds yucky, either your header is flawed or they make a crappy product. How tight is it exactly? When I bought my NWOR header years back they claimed I could mount it to the head without a gasket. I didn't believe them for a second, and used a metal gasket with that copper spray form a gasket on each side. It sealed up nice and never leaked. If you only need another 1/8 to a 1/4 inch you could probably double up metal gaskets if you sealed in between them as well and paid very careful attention to the torque on the studs. If you cant return the header, find a good welding shop and have them heat it up and bend it a little bit, a good exhaust shop may even be able to cut it off before the offending area and bend a few new tubes for it then weld it up. But return it first if you can. Bad rap, sorry to hear about it.

Just thought of more. Get a grinder and grind the old bolts off or I think I have cut them off with a sawzall before and just replaced the bolts. I also made my own cat gaskets out of 22 guage galvanized steel that lasted quite a while. 2.25 exhaust is perfect for a 22r, a cat wont make it much quieter (ask me how I know haha).

Oh yeah and fawk those gaskets, get metal ones. Especially for the cat. Also if you use any kind of form in place gasket make sure the surfaces are super clean, I scrape mine with a chisel, scrub with a green scrubby, then wipe clean with alcohol or brake clean.
