Like Fuzz, I think there's more to be squeezed out of the 4.7L motor without significantly compromising any reliability or driving characteristics. 50-100hp is probably likely on a reasonable budget. Personally, I'd spend about $3-4k to get the HP and torque figures in the 300HP / 375lb/ft range.

The biggest question is what's the path to getting more power in a cost effective manner for the 4.7L. We already know these levels of performance exist ...

Cost range - Product Mod - Power - Cost

$0 - 1k - DT header - 22hp / 10lb-ft - $650

$1k - 5k - Unknown - 50-100hp (maybe?) - NA

$5k - 10k - TRD SC (disco'd) - 125hp - $7k (G'luck!)

$10k - and up - SleeTurbo/Bullet SC - +150hp - ~$15k
- 5.7L conversion - ~150hp - +$15k

Are the TRD SC's even possible to find? I'm willing to spend 6-8k for the 125-150hp but can't find a TRD SC to save my life.

They aren't easy to find. And Some rumors As to why they were discontinued where smogging issues and reliability. Unfortunately that's too expensive of a risk for us CA owners. And I'm not sure I'd want a 350-425 HP motor when I'm 4x4'ing.

It's why I plan to find an alternative to the SC for power. I'd be plenty happy with ~300 HP (just enough to be be more fleet of foot) and mostly the same torque and engine characteristics. 230 HP from the factory + 20 with DT header. That leaves ~50 HP to be discovered.

Does anyone make more aggressive cams for the 2uz? I guess you'd need a tune as well. And double your gas budget... but it'd get you that power.

I would love to find another 100HP out of the 2UZ for a descent price. I am doing headers and already did the intake (many will debate on the deckplate but :meh:). I plan on full exhaust after the headers so that should pick up a few HP. Keep us up to date on what you find.

Read page 2. Thats pretty much what we've been focusing on.

And paying roughly $2k and getting 30-40 hp is a very worth while project IMO. Adding that bump to the header increase (a combined 60hp total), these trucks will be putting out just under 300 hp. A tune or tune w/ intake mod will surely get a Mudder in the 300 and up range. For a total cost of $3-4k it's a fraction of the SC and turbo costs while maintaining the reliability and desired torque curves for daily driving and trails.

this gets me fired up.

Wasn't it TTC Performance that has camshafts and stroker kits for the 2UZ? IIRC they had 2 kits that bumped you up to a 5.something. Spendy, like $8k and $15k for the kits.

There's a lot involved when you start tampering withe heads/valves/cams. Looks like TTC had a bad experience with a customer so I'm trying to vet out the story. And he may have offered the stroker kits your talking about but $8k-15k for a stroked motor might be a better alternative to some of the SC/Turbo kits I've seen.

In either case, I don't think that fits my desired application. I still want to be out on the trails and scooting around town with the family. +400hp motors just doesn't seem right. I think a slight bump is more appropriate and should be substantially cheaper than complete SC/Turbo and stroker kits.

They do make some custom camshafts for the 2UZ, which was what Petrotk40 was asking about:grinpimp:

Yep, we are looking in to those an that's the more likely route. The real question comes down to how much a cam will affect things like idle lope, drivability, low end torque, Mpg's. Also there port and polish options too. So there's a lot to map out and we'll need a shop.

It would be nice to know what the options are in the 2k, 4k, 6k and 8k range are. I know you are interested in the 2-4k range and 50-80hp but it's worth finding out what the details are for next level up in price/performance.

Maybe we should work on dropping in the 5.7 motor to our old ass trucks... keep it OEM i say!
this has been done in Dubai, 3UR 5.7L retrofitted into 2006 LC100 engine bay >>
