Ever since I rebuilt my engine it has ran ALOT cooler, now that its winter and I need a heater, Im starting to worry.

I drive about 40 miles a day, 20 one way and 20 back. Its stop and go traffic, but my engine rarely sees 150*.

When it was 100* out side, the engine never ran past 175, even after a hard wheeling session. I prided myself on this.

The thermostat is in and its not stuck (ive checked), ive even replaced it with two other Oriellys brand "Murray".

The heater gets warm so far, but Im afraid it wont be sufficient when I start having to defrost my windshield every morning.

This is against the grain, but how do I make my truck run warmer?

Howdy! It sounds like the t-stat is opening way to cool. You could always test it in a pan of water on the stove top. When I had my stock 72 FJ 40 in Wyoming, I used to completely block off the air flow in the radiator with a thin sheet of steel, as long as it was staying below zero all day. Don't use cardboard, as it gets pretty soggy when wet. John

are you sure your temp gauge is accurate? or is the heater actually blowing cooler air than you'd like?

Pretty sure the temp gauge is right on. Reads a little higher than the electronic one i through on to check it. Heater blows heat fine now, But when it gets colder Im worried the engine wont warm up enough to get the heater warm.

i have read on this forum that autozone and the like list 180 deg thermostats as stock since you bought your thermostat from a parts store i am assuming you have a 180 deg thermostat. i would call who ever you bought it from and ask then request the 195 deg . also make sure you have it installed right.

Did you have the heater valve open when you were filling the coolant?
Have you checked to make sure coolant is topped off?

Its full, Perfect level. Antifreeze is good to -15* which is unheard of around here.

Its the 195* thermo, considering I rang it up for myself. I called to make sure the part number matched, they do.

At Oreillys they listed it like this "Hot Weather Thermostat" 180* or "Factory Replacement Thermostat" 195*

Ya know my engine gasket set (felpro) came with an O-ring that went around the thermostat ...literaly....had to put it on. On the 62's if you dont have this the rig will not warm up properly but the 62 o-ring just sits down. I was told in this section that there was no such O-ring for my 84.........why did I get one? I looked and if I did not use it water would have went around the outside of the thermstat.

Edit......my intake is now an 85......sorry. Forgot I swapped out

If you don't put that grooved O-ring around the thermostat, you will get a massive coolant leak. There is no other gasket on the water outlet where it bolts to the top of the intake, just that O-ring. The thermostat in an FJ62 is very different, there are actually 2 gaskets on it, one that sits on top. If you leave that one out, the 3FE won't get warm enough. But the 22RE doesn't have that gasket.

Do you have access to an infrared thermometer? Very handy tool for this kind of thing.

ok, thanks for the verifcation:beer:
