The connector on the wire has 3 cone shape rubber wasyhers on the back. When the connector is inserted into the housing these compress slightly and seal into the housing. Whether or not the gasket is there, it has failed. I can't imagine why you wouldn't replace a part that costs less than $2.00, takes about 10 minutes to install, probably won't even get dirty and is broken.

But to each his own, break out the tape.
