Hi all, literally about to replace my water pump (engine rebuild) and looked inside the rebuilt engine to see a good amount of surface rust. I was going to use the new pump but the old pump seemed to be working just fine, and don’t think I want all that rust rolling thru the new one
Curious your thoughts

It is normal. There is water inside the engine and engine is bare metal so it will rust. Coolant has anti-rust additives but in the 30-40 years time rust will be there. If you want you can flush the engine and coolant channels with citric acid or dish washer tablets. But the risk of aluminium parts corroding is there. But if you add acid or other and run it to temp and then take it out and flush couple times it should be ok. I did it with a tractor that had heating problems. Added acid and took it for a spin, then flushed and new acid in. Did it four times and then flushed with tap water for one small drive and then added coolant. Heating problems went away.

replace the water pump...you want to do it a year from now when the old one does finally quit?

I used this stuff to derust my engine and cooling system. It's non-corrosive so shouldn't hurt anything.
THERMOCURE™ - Cooling System Rust Remover & Flush | EVAPO-RUST® - https://www.evapo-rust.com/crc-thermocure/

I’ve become a recent Evaporust disciple. Used it to de rust an old VW bug gas tank and a few other odds and ends recently.
Stuff is a game changer.

Didn’t know about Thermocure but it sounds like a great product if it’s anything like their regular stuff.

You put it in with distilled water. Drive it around a bit everyday for a couple of days, getting it nice and warm. Then drain it and keep flushing it until it comes out clear, it will come out black at first!

Gotcha…. I wonder if this can explain my heating problems on my rig. Whenever I Would turn the heater on, it would start to rev UNCONTROLABLY until I shut it off. Not that the heater worked anyway…Never seen anything like it. Just spitballing.
