Interesting news about turnbuckles...

For those of you in my situation of retrofitting a soft top to a hard top, or if you simply have old hardware, the factory turnbuckles are available.

The top requires 10 of them. There are 297 left in the supply chain.

At $4.78 a piece, they aren't exactly cheap, but they are Genuine Toyota, top quality and correct for the application.

You're looking at $47.80 for 10 of them... PM me if you want them. Eshan's hardware will, unfortunately, not be this caliber.

Hey Chris I'm in if it's not too late. I'm a 74 with small barn doors, hoping for black canvas (if not vinal will work) w/ mini windows bows and hardware. Thanks

Finally got samples of the canvas. Its Khaki, Black and green shown. I used a flash to take the pic so the picture does not exactly resemble the colors. Again there are concerns of fading of black and green to closer to khaki. I will be doing some experiments and posting picspf the results.
Thanks
Ehsan

Various updates and reminders:

Marc (Ground Up) was very kind to enlighten me on soft top history, specifically regarding the turnbuckles. Here's what he says: "The turnbuckles shown are stock and in the stock locations. That said, Toyota had a company here in the US making the canvas tops to sell in the US Toyota parts houses. The company was kayline. They required 22 of the turnbuckles. You can see the top that was made by them now being made by STC. They sell there tops to Specter Off Road."

Therefore, 10 is the correct number of turnbuckles for this application. thanks to Marc for clarifying and to Joe (joemck7) for taking a close look and asking!

Marc has also been kind enough to offer to provide measurements for those of us converting to soft tops to make sure turnbuckle placement is as close to correct as it can be... providing the tops are dead-on, which Ehsan promises... :)

Those that have ordered and/or paid for 22 turnbuckles will be getting the excess funds returned on Monday. I apologize for the confusion I created.

As a reminder (posted here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showpost.php?p=1076630&postcount=122), I will be on vacation from April 26th through May 3rd. The funds will be wired no later than May 5th, provided all the checks have cleared and are considered "good funds" and eligible to wire.

If anyone wishes to paypal (and it's not attached to a credit card), use valkyrie610@yahoo.com.

Any questions or concerns, let's get 'em straightend out by Wednesday!

FYI, Specialty Top Co. (formerly Kayline) is still very much in business if you want to get turnbuckles from them. They are a local Denver company, which supports Rising Sun and TLCA. Their web site is here:
http://specialtytopco.com/

They still make the OEM replacement top, but no bows.

In your paypal you said you were shipping material to Ehsan...So will you be getting bows or anything with that?

I want to make sure I understand what your deal is...

No, no bows needed. I'm not ordering a soft top. I'm ordering the left and right half doors, which have a removable soft upper half. The material is for the upper half of the two doors, so it will match my current STC soft top.

My 1981 FJ40 is too new for that old style OEM soft top! :grinpimp:

Eshan e-mailed me his address, so I will ship the fabric directly to him. I'll go get it from STC the week after next, after Cruise Moab.

If I can't get the fabric or if it gets lost in international shipping, then I'll simply have Eshan make the uppers out of black vinyl.

Please note:
1. Not canvas: black vinyl denim
2. dark gray inner panels (in case he has access to several shades of gray)

Squirrel fur?

Hmmm. Is that an option? :grinpimp:

Thanks much for putting this together. It's got to be some serious effort!

I'd like to supply the squirrel fur if it's all right. Nice grey with rust color combo. The seed robbing buggers have been asking for it for years, ever since they moved to the country like the Clampetts and started living off our bird feeders.:D

Seriously, Chris, I was assuming the half doors came with grey panels, which is fine for me. If you need to specify color for each of us put me down for grey. Not sure what shade is correct for a stock '76 interior. cheers, theo
