Found a late transmission and case to swap into my 83 60.

If I’m not mistaken, I either need the accompanying drive shafts or need to remove 3 inches from the rear and add 3 inches to the front.

Can anyone confirm that? I was going to pull mine out and rebuild it but this set up has 1000 miles on it and the price was a steal : )

I am unsure of the need to lengthen/shorten the driveshaft.

The later 38mm idler shaft T-case does have different flanges on it, but is identical dimensionally to the previous 34mm idler.

If you are comparing a H55/H55F maybe the 5 speed is longer? I’m not sure.

I should mention I’m swapping in a late 4 speed and transfer case not just the transfer case.

Yea, the late model H42 is longer, it has a "dummy" housing that makes it match the overall length of the H55F. As such, drivelines and shift linkage need to come from the later combo. Good news, if you modify for the H42 "long", adding a H55F in the future is a direct swap.
