Lance - welcome to esteemed flop club! ... you have not the 'full wheeling experience' until you have flopped at least once... ha-ha. That flop below (in 2006 on the Island) I started the engine and drove out on lockers.

Dam Lance sorry to here. Let me know if your parting it out. Just kidding man. But I think I see a lhd conversion in the near future.. Funny I'm in lumby and drove by this place he has a nice collection of right offs ended up being granite grinders .

Bummer! Glad you're okay and able to put on a smile for the camera (or was that a grimace?)

At least word is that ICBC is giving good payouts to RHDs that have claims. Take the $$, buy it back, and do something fun... LHD conversion, truggy, sky's the limit now!

Well I can say that Lance was soooo cool during and after the incident... No excitement, hysterics etc. Just well played man! I was 2 81 lengths behind with the little guy and watched the whole thing. It went up and I thought it was going over but then it seemed to stabilize for a second, seemingly ok but then over she went. The last I saw was Lance's arm out the window - fortunately he pulled it back in time! I got a wheel against a rock, locked the brakes and ran up to see what I could do and the truck seemed to shift a bit so I advised Lance to stay put for a moment- no smoke etc. All ok and the truck was firm so the rest is history. The recovery was routine and we remembered to strap the back bumper to a tree as the truck rolled quickly down hill once on 2 wheels. Fired right up with a bit of a smokescreen. I think the RF tire dropped into a deep hole and the 81 simply followed the stiff front axle over.
Have to admit it was a bit hairy following this over the obstacle, I played it really safe and dropped straight off with a huge whack on the Labs bumper but what the heck...

I think it's the same spot that Marcin flopped oh so many years ago? The ledge on the way down if you've taken the creek crossing off the main road.

No Marcin was higher up, his went up an embankment and he couldn't turn because of the locker.

What is it with the instinct to stick your hand out the window as if you could stop it? I did the same thing.

Post op suggestion...

I wheel with the front sway bar disconnected. I find it allows the axle to move more freely and doesn't take the body with it when dropping down an obstacle. Good example is V-Rock. When I descend the body stays almost dead level when the front wheels drop down the dips near the bottom. With the sway bar on it feels way tippier.

Yup. I did a very gentle flop of my red BJ42 years ago on Blue Mtn. The insurance was expiring (the next day if memory serves) in anticipation of beginning the frame off renovation. The top did not get repaired as part of the build.

Dunno. Put Clayton behind the wheel for a recent Whipsaw run and was talking him through the trail. At one point he had not compensated for body lean and the passenger side roof came really close to a tree. My automatic instinct was to reach out and push it...immediately followed by withdrawing it and saying to self..."that was stupid".

Lance...looking forward to seeing what you do with the resurrection. An 81/4* would be way cool!

In one of my last trips out with my fj40 (an October Cheam run with the club) I remember playing around in the gravel pit at the end and sticking a leg out (topless, no doors) as I felt it going over a bit. And like Greg said, quickly retracted it thinking "well that was dumb".
If I ever get a 40 again, I'll invest in the tube doors :)

What have you done to make the disconnection easier? I vaguely recall doing it, or attempting to, and then said screw it because it was a pain in the ass with the OEM setup.

And something Google threw together for me...

Lance's first attempt at "the gatekeeper" on our way up. Didn't get a lot of photos this trip as I was solo and spotting the rest of the time; except for the "incident", was just about to get out and spot but saw it all happen in my mirror.

Jeff I have simply put a S/S 'Speed Pin' in place of the bolts on the axle. Zap strap bar up to frame and voila!

Sticking the arm out is a natural instinct when falling.
When racing cars a net/webbing must be used on the driver's side window of the driver for just that reason.
Removing one side of the sway bar link makes tons of sense if your looking for a softer suspension.

I made a little bracket to pin the sway bar up to the frame, but like Graham said, you can just zap strap it to the frame. I pulled out the 10mm bolts and use a couple spring pins, but its just a matter of pulling out the bolts and getting the bar up and secured to the frame.

Rugy, its not just a matter of softer, I feel it makes an 80 way more balanced when wheeling to have the front bar disconnected. On the road it feels like driving a large pail of water though...

Ouch.
I think you now deserve that "gold Rolex" that Graham gave me after I did that to mine. Don't get excited, it doesn't work ...not surprising though.

That's the gold watch he had hidden in his ass when he bought it south of the border, so he wouldn't have to pay duty on it. Keep it!

Sounds like a day. That's to bad about your truck Lance but at least your OK.
How much damage to the side of your truck?

Body is a write off and will eventually be a body parts donor. Not going to another 80 body or try and fix it. The Aqualu conversion makes the most sense to me the other two options would be pretty close in price. Re-body it with another 80 body would be the cheapest for sure and the amount a body shop would charge to stitch in a section might be close to the Aqualu, judging from what was charged to icbc from a mild fender bender.
