My wife and I just blew out our big "gym bag" style nylon duffle. She has been looking at Target/Wal Mart etc around here for a replacement but I've been suggesting something a bit better quality. I'm wondering what peoples favorite duffle luggage is and whether the spendy stuff is worth it. I've been eying up the Duluth Pack large duffle but question if it's worth 10x what the department stores have. Do they provide a lifetime warranty on that stuff? Do they hold up well?

Have you found a cheaper option that takes a beating and keeps on holding?

Yep....check out the North Face duffle bags (base camp duffle) that are coated in a PVC material. I've taken mine all over the world for over 7 years and although they don't look so good they are still 100% functional.
 
I am VERY happy with the products of Eagle Creek. they can be found at REI et al. they are much more expensive than the wally world variety. but the switch off is that you only have to buy it once. they also have on some models have a "no matter what garantee".

I have had so many cheezy duffels break at the right or wrong time I just invested once.
 
REI sucks the big monkey butt

I know they have neat stuff, but it can be purchased elsewhere and you will not be supporting a company that feeds the Sierra Club a considerable amount of money each year..
 
here are some NF bags w/ photos.

both of these bags have been to brazil, Tierra del Fuego, Singapore, Thailand, Malasyia and Borneo.:bounce: they have taken A TON of beating by local porters, taxi's and overpacking. I would put my recomendation for a wheels on your duffel. it makes a GREAT DEAL of difference if you dont have to lift 50lbs rather than roll it across the ground.

Duluth Pack is great stuff. I have 3 bags, performed very well in rough duty for 20+ years. If you don't mind spending the $$, their stuff is well worth it.

I stay away from REI..personal reasons..Mace has it right.

Some of the best bang for your buck are used military packs from Army Surplus stores and/or Sportsman's Guide.

Eagle Industries, out of Missouri, makes some of the toughest gear bags and they have a life time waranty. I've used them for years, personally and professionally, and never had a problem. They even custom design stuff for you ($). I just got back from MOAB with them carring all the usual stuff....now there covered in red dust, but I can thow them in the washing machine, re-treat and they're ready to go.
