Dual Sport Bikes

All you two wheelers out there, I'm looking to sell my Saturn and pick up a bike for a commuter. I like the naked/standard bikes (kinda like the old GS500 and your typical Buell, Ducati), but the dual-sports are nice too. Which one would be best for someone who is average height (for 1987 - read 5'8") and has never really ridden a motorcycle? I'm thinking I'd like to keep the engine under 500cc and the weight as close to or under 400. Thumpers are fine, I've got no real allegiance to any brand or motor style.

My big thing is that I'm not looking for a project or something that needs tons of work to keep running. My 60 is my mechanical outlet, so with this motorcycle, I'm looking for something very reliable that I can just get on and ride. I don't mind doing work if it needs it (replacing things, regular maintenance, etc.), but don't want to have to work on it to ride it. Think 2000-2006 models.

Check out Ducati Monsters..really nice bike..not super fast, handle great..sound even better..i dont have one but my dad has owned a few Ducati's and test rode a 2006 and loved it..
