No issues on my morning commute, went to take the boys to an activity and there was a sudden shudder/wobbling when I put it in reverse that seemed to die down a bit after 20 feet. Put her in drive and the shudder happened again, parked and there was a new whine, videos attached. Any ideas? Safe to drive 30 miles to the mechanic or do I need a tow?

2006 LX, timing belt has been replaced about 60k miles ago, it's the third IIRC. My fear is grenading the engine obviously. Can't really afford a new engine or car right now.

Video below

By no means am I a pro, but a timing belt at 60k is not a worry… and does not have symptoms. Most are fine until the moment they are not.

Ok I was thinking like transmission shudder but after watching the video it sounds like a rubbing noise. It is coming from the engine bay? My first thought was the fan rubbing against the shroud but that doesn’t make sense. Maybe something rubbing against the drive shaft while engaged?

Good call, I thought fan as well but it's something rubbing on the engine cover. Of course I couldn't find my 10mm socket to take it off so it's going to come off after work today.

On the Facebook 100 series group the leading thought is bad engine mount but there is no evidence of the fan hitting the shroud.

The front left CV boot is torn to shreds, looks recent.

I'll update once I take the cover off and see whats hitting it and then post final remarks once the mechanic is done with her.

a lot of people leave the engine cover off since it’s an opportunity for rodents to hide.

If not engine cover.

Try stopped fan, to see if sound stop. You can stop fan with rolled up paper food store brown bag or newspaper. Once fan clutch warmed up, before engine hit ~194~ ECT.

If engine mount busted. You see engine lift, with foot on brake as you give it gas while in gear. Busted, could result in fan clipping fan shroud.

Almost sounds it transfer case not full in gear. But it's more of a plastic sound.

Couldnt be busted axle?

Front left axle looks fubar. But could that cause a rattle when stationary?

Fair point. Just watched the video. If your car is off can you wobble the fan by hand? Happened to me once but I think the cause was a bad pulley

I would also remove the belt and check all the pulleys to see if any are seized. Its not too hard to remove the belt temporarily
