"Dogs are mans best friend" is a modern bias. They are treated no different than chickens or pigs in many parts of the world, and considered vermin in many other areas. If you get squemish about dog fighting but think it's okay for chickens or bulls to get killed for sport it's a cultural thing. It is not because one can be served up for dinner afterward and the other wouldn't be.

As far as NFL goes it's a pussy sport. Watch Rugby sometime if you want to see a violent contact sport. Hell more people get injured in the stands at a rugby match than on the field in a football game. I don't care if people want to fight each other, for fun or profit, as long as all the participants are willing.

Respect for dogs is not a modern bias. The relationship between man and dog is 25,000 years old, and is one of reverence and respect. Some cultures treat dogs in a less than dignified manner, but in the scope of the history of this relationship, the mistreatment of dogs is a modern trend. In the last few centuries, as dogs became less important to men for survival, men have become less reverent towards dogs.

Dogs are not like other animals. Until very recently, dogs were a vital part of our survival scheme. Without them, herding animals would have been impossible. No herding, no surplus of food. No surplus of food, no civilization! After 25,000 years of domestication, their thought processes and intellect are much more reflective of man's influence than that of its own wild ancestry.

Have you ever wondered why modern people, as have our ancestors for millenia, bring a dog too young to care for itself to their children and ask them to care for it? This tradition is so old, we cannot divorce it from our collective consciousness. It is older than a belief in one god, older than written language, older than civilization itself.

But this should not matter. We aren't talking about a dogfighting ring in Tokyo or Sao Paulo, we're talking about Virginia, United States. Here, in this country, at this time, we have agreed upon a cultural standard that dogfighting is a morally reprehensible act, an act of brutality which lends no benefit to the purveyors or clients other than entertainment and financial gain. Like slavery, or wife-beating, or mob riots, or lynching, or lobotomizing adulterers, dogfighting may fly in other countries as it has in our own past, but we have the obligation to call it what it is.

I think some people just get joy from watching real violence. That is why the ultimate fighting or bare knuckle fighting is so popular. People have a thirst for violence and gambling. I don't understand it but I know it exists. I think it has to do with anger.

little late chiming in, but something everyone must consider is that these dogs have been bred specifically for dog fighting much the same way a beagle or a pointer has been for hunting. Pit bulls are specialized in this sense. Gameness is the overall quality that is desired in a pit bull, it is the never say die attitude, the never surrender quality that we all admire in any individual. It is the single most important quality that is bred into these animals. I am sure we have seen the videos of these animals being shot at by police but they keep coming. That is gameness. I personally am against dog fighting but I admire the courageousness, the gameness of these animals. I have owned a few pit bulls and they were all the gentlest kindest pets I have ever owned, but once they set sight on another dog (usually some bonehead in my neighborhood with an unleashed dog) he was another animal. It was like he was in a zone or something. There was nothing else that mattered to him but to get that dog. I don't think these dogs are ever forced to fight as people will say, we as their masters put them in situation where their breeding takes over and they do what they have been bred for hundreds of years to do. SO what do we do? Do we kill all of these animals? So far none of the dogs vick owned have been claimed and they have all been declared unadoptable and will be put down. The book needs to be thrown at dog fighters. That much is a given. Unfortunately the breed is that one that will pay the price in the end. A breed that was bred over hundreds of years for no other purpose than to provide us entertainment and enjoyment in a blood sport.

It doesn't take too many generations to breed out or in a particular trait. Take pointing labs, grey Labs, or Labradoodles for instance. In a relatively short period of time, breeder have honed in the traits they desire, and generally removed ones they don't. There is no good reason that they couldn't or haven't done the same with pits.

what about

cockfighting.jpg

do you find it equally as disturbing?
Well, those cocks don't have the blades . . .

I don't like the cock fights either, but as mentioned above, they somehow bother me a little less than dog fights.

I'd concur with this statement.

How can someone who doesn't know who Shannon Sharpe or Clinton Portis is even comment on what is and what is not part of the black culture?

That's like saying that black people don't talk during the movies, but never having tasted Grapico.

It's insane.

IN the beginning of the century, the Pit bull was admired more as the friendly, gentle family dog. Hence "petie" in the little rascals/our gang, and other symbols of americana.

Amen, brother. A-fxxxing-men.

you could possible breed out the gameness or "desire" to fight out of a dog, but how do you do that without fighting the dogs and then only breeding the non fighting ones? My pit was most gentle dog around, he never so much as was aggressive toward me or any member of our family. He never gave any indication of any desire to fight and was really unassuming. People would often kid me that their little poodle would kick my dogs butt as He was all of 20 pounds of pure muscle and was maybe only knee high, but he had a switch in him that lit him up whenever he saw another dog. I always tried my best to discourage him and often had to drag his crying and whimpering butt home whenver I encountered a stray dog on the block, he would be so pissed that he did not get loose. Usually the other owners would just laugh and tell me that their rott or G. Shepard would not hurt my little dog, often times their dogs were the ones off leash and lose. But guess whose dog would make the evening news if there would have been a tussle. Regardless of what dog we have, we must be responsible owners.

Pit Bulls were not always thus. They were not always the proxy-penises for some in our midst. Back at the turn of the century (from the 19th to the 20th), the American Pit Bull was THE most popular breed in the United States. As a PET. Not for fighting. Not for breeding for fighting. Not for abuse. For a domestic pet. What has happened to that breed is truly sad. And no--I am not Eric.

Exactly my point as well.

Agreed, "all" of the American Staffordshire Terriers that I have known have been gentle and good natured dogs.

I'm not saying that there aren't any bad/ill raised dogs of this breed out there, but that they can be really great dogs.

I am not Eric, either. But, I do think these dogs get picked on a bit too much. If they are raised in a typical environment like any other Golden Retriever or Labrador Retreiver, they will never make it to the 6:00 o'clock news.

This needs to kept at the top.

Abit late on this but...any breed can be "good or bad" depending on trainnig and breeding. As for Vick and his associates drop them in a pit with the remaining dogs, let them fight, shoot the winner and the bury the whole mess. I guess I have zero tolerence for fighting any animal except people. People are making their own choice to enter the ring.
