Been having a power steering leak that became more of a fluid swap with the rate of loss on my 99 3/4 ton cummins rig.

Powerwashed it yesterday, and the leak appears to be coming from the top of the steering gearbox. There are four bolts holding on a plate that is the opposite side of the pitman shaft. I believe this is the gear section of the dodge boxes.

Well, two of the nuts were loose, so snugged them up and leak has slowed down.

Planning on trying to swap that gasket out, but wanted to post up to see if anyone had any advice.

Thanks,

Read up on tightening the main shaft. I have rebuilt similar boxes. There is a bunch of stuff about counting and trying to get it back to the original location. Just adjust tension by feel. Right to the point where there is no slop. You will feel it In the steering wheel if it's too tight immediately and it will not self center as well. I tightened my box on my dodge twice in the 5 years do owned it. Lots of writ ups on the 80 too they are all very similar. It is very quick to adjust with 2 tools.

I watched a video on tightening up the steering, and agree, not too hard. Now that is the center nut/hex bolt -- my issue is the entire cover which that piece is in the center of.

I can't find anywhere if I can just pull that entire thing off and replace the gasket, or if that is opening a can of worms.

well i know it's not your exact situation but i can't imagine why it can't be done.

i would put the front up on jack stands to make sure there is no force on the main output shaft and remove it. is there room to remove the bolts and cap? i don't have my dodge any more to look for placement and clearance. I had a weak moment this spring put it up on craigslist and was gone in a few days for asking price. kind of regret it but it's done.

Thanks for the link...... that does not look like fun, even on a bench.

Think I will keep running it as is (very little leak now) and then just replace it when it shoots cr&ps. about $100 for rebuilt unit on rockauto, so not worth time rebuilding.

Thanks, and sorry to hear that you sold your rig. Just talked to a guy with 900k on original engine, third tranny though. 12v
