I'm looking to build a non-portable propane grill. I'd like to be able to move it but not take it along on trips. I'm thinking of welding up a heavy steel box on legs. I can add vents and drains as needed. My biggest question is the gas delivery mechanism. I have been referred to "log lighter" systems...

Anyone know anything about this stuff?

I'd like to build something that won't turn to a pile of rust in a couple of years outside.

The only thing special on gas is the regulator/control. Pick propane or natural gas for what your gas supply is. Strongly suggest two or more burners circuits unless the grill is small. For the burners you can just drill small holes in the sides of a piece of black pipe. You may consider getting control valves that will shut off if the flame goes out. They will need a thermal couple mounted in the flame.

You can pick up replacement burners and control valves from places like home depot. That might be a good starting point, as those usually have an adjustable length and require no fabbing other than mounting them.
